U-Joint question
« on: July 30, 2008 - 03:49:21 PM »
Hey guys,
I've got a dilemma. I am doing a third member changeout. I've got a '74 Challenger with an 8 3/4" rear end. I dropped the drive shaft and didn't like the looks of the u-joint, so I got another one. The problem is it's not the same as what came out. The existing U-joint has two different bearing cup sizes and it's two different widths. The bearing cup for the pinion yoke is 1.078". The old center section (489 case) is a 2 1/8" pinion yoke. No problem here as the new 3rd member is also a 2 1/8" yoke. The drive shaft has a 1.125-1.126" bearing cup size and is wider than the pinion yoke. The outside diameter of the old U-joint (with the bearing cups on) is approx 3 1/8" for the pinion yoke end and approx 3 5/8" on the drive shaft end. Where in the world can I find a U-joint like this?? The one I have is the same width all the way around and has all 4 bearing cups the same diameter at 1.078". I can buy a U-joint with the larger bearing cups, but I have the same problem with two different size bearing cups and two different widths. What have I got here?? I am puzzled!! And where can I get a new one. I've looked at the Summit web site because they give very specific dimensions unlike other auto parts sites, but no luck. Thanks guys! :dunno: :clueless: :pullinghair: :swear:

You need the conversion U-joint, you "should" be able to ask a competent parts store for it(napa)  I have one on my car but don't have the #'s handy right now.

Tom

Tell them you need a 7260 to 7290 joint.  Maybe a search here will show the #'s.

OK,
I think I've answered my own question. There is a U-joint package (PN P5007418) that adapts the 7260 driveshaft which has a 2 1/8" yoke and 1.078" bearing cap to a 7290 axle yoke which is a 2 5/8" yoke and a 1.126" bearing cap. Mine is backwards, but shouldn't matter as I have a 7260 axle yoke (742 case third member) and a 7290 drive shaft. Unfortunately, it's not an "off the shelf" item. I'll have to order it. Anybody else have to do this? Any other suggestions?? I am always open to the help you guys offer. I'm just an old shade tree mechanic!! :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley:

Yep,
I'm dropping in the 4:10's. At least I was. Thanks for the info Tom. I did find the U-joint at several sources on-line, but decided to check my local Napa. That was a wasted trip. The Napa by my house pulled up a part number for the U-joint, but didn't have it locally. The guy told me a store on the other side of the river had one on the shelf; about a 30 minute drive or 45 minutes in rush hour. Unfortunately I chose rush hour, got to the store and the clerk told me it wasn't on the shelf, but did show up on the computer as being "in stock". I was  :swear: :stomp: :swear:. I called the manager and let him have it. He was very apologetic, but it didn't help pay for the gas & time I wasted. It's not an emergency, I just wanted to get the thing done. He'll have it for me tomorrow. I guess I'll have to see how the 295/50-15's spin in his parking lot with the 4:10's  I'm afraid they aren't too interstate friendly. Maybe I can catch up to MEK next year, Carlisle 2009!! :roflsmiley:
