70' model year F 440 HP engine and tranny WIW
« on: August 01, 2008 - 12:37:22 AM »
I have a F 440 HP engine date 8/29 pan rail OG 180274. The motor is a complete long block-no intake or carbs. The engine is disassembled. The block and heads are reconditioned and ready, crank turned 10/10. block .30 over. This motor was an original 6 pack. I know you can't tell by the numbers but I know what car it originally came out of. It has 6 pack rods & damper. The tranny is a rebuidable core, and I think out of the same car. How do I tell if the tranny is numbers matching to the engine??? Whats it all worth??? Thanks!!!

It depends on if the valves have been sunk into the head and the quality of the bore job and crank work. I'd rather have an untouched well worn virgin motor to build myself then something possibly ruined by shoddy machine work. Just the opinion of a machinist. Most people will never know the difference anyway, so I guess whatever you can get for it is what it's worth.

Machine work was done by Randy Alber, one of the best in northern Indiana. I spent $800 on cleaning, mag, align bore, bore job, reconditioned heads. Randy is known as a head genius and these were done right. I have an interested party and just trying to come up with a fair price. Again complete long block & tranny. Thanks

You dont mention alot of key things that must be known to determine the engines value.

A. Is the pistons Ross or quality forged?   Or is it the cheaper cast.

B  Camshaft and kit.  High performance quality name and grind.  Has it been balanced?  I didnt remember the post.  Alot of people are a little nervous over buying a motor from someone claiming its "quality" machine work.   It probably is, but most of us know and trust our machinist and dont know yours.

C. 906 and 415 or other Mopar heads are a dime a dozen, I mean a dime a dozen.  Simply rebuilt heads with stock valves are not worth more than the value of the machine work.
I would say a fair market value for the heads $350 tops!

Now for the block and machine work and assuming its a new camshaft with a quality grind.    $2000 to $2500.   Probably the lower end of the scale as it is not assembled.

As for the 727.  Its value isnt worth anything more than a core.  $200 TOPS.  If you end up haggling over the final price throw this in for free to seal the deal.

The claim on these "alleged" 440 six pack blocks is just that.   It seems every other block nowadays came from a true 440 six pack car.   I speak only for myself and say the motor is worth the above values either way.   I dont mean that with any disrepect.   But if you have a car that came with a 440 six pack.  Its either a matching numbers car or it isnt.........Period.   The claim that well this is a 440 six pack motor just from another car is like being pregnant.   She is either matching numbers (pregnant) with your baby, or your car engine is a step child.

Doesnt matter if it was a 6pk engine or not now,It is only good for the matching numbers car. The 69 70 and 71 are the most desireable years to have. The heads you have I guess you know by now are not original to the engine. They are closed chambered, but I cant see the numbers. Looks like 516's by the size of the valves, which by the way need to be thrown away. Look how far down they are sunken into the seats. Heavy rods blocks are a thing of the past, but It would be worth  quite a bit to the right person. But not enough info. I would even trade you my 68 running 440 block for your 70 block, just to have the right year. But really, you dont have a bunch there unless you can say what internals come with it.

 :iagree:

I didnt even look close enough to see that they were closed chamber heads.  But the valves are sunk down into the head.  Heads have been worked on before.   Like we noted above.  You dont list much info on the engine.  I mean are these cleaned up valve springs and valves reinstalled.   They appear to be.   Like Moparal says, and mine is the case too, some of the value of the engine is that some of us would like to have the same year model 440 that our car is.   I think $2000 is spot on, assuming you have receipts for the machine work.   As for the heads.  If they were mine, I would see if I could get a couple hundred for them and apply it the purchase of the new 440 source aluminum heads bare.  I have the rest of the hardware.

The motor was the original motor in a six pack car. The car was totaled 25 years ago, set outside and started rusting bad, ( I know the car since new) so it was scraped about 10 years ago but the motor and tranny were saved. A guy contacted me about buying the engine/tranny because it was date code correct for the v code car he is restoring. I failed to give enough details, so here are some additions. The pistons are forged speed pro. Cam is approx, .510 lift. I have all the correct parts for this engine from pan to valve covers, including the correct damper and exhaust manifolds. The machine work is excellent, you will have to trust me there. Im just trying to get a ballpark that would be fair for both partys. Thanks again.

That would require that we suspend belief of visual evidence you provided to the contrary.  :picture:

From what I understand all six pack engines were built on the night shift. This means they would have the HP2 designation.

Not true.

Night shift would be 3rd shift, no HP3 engines are known.
