(Edelbrock) AFB air door counterweight lightening hole location
« on: August 01, 2008 - 06:21:15 PM »
I have seen AFB air door counterweights with lightening holes drilled in the locations on the photo below.  What is the best area to remove weight from to get the secondarys in the game sooner?

I don't know where the best place would be to drill. I would start very small though because once the counterweight is too light it is going to bog. IMO - I would make sure you can get a spare easily (or have one on hand) before drilling this one. Might try the race only forum on moparts and ask there since this (to me) is more of a drag racing modification. Or if you have access to the other style edelbrock carb (Thunder series?), I think it has a spring that can be adjusted to control the air door opening rate like on the thermoquads.

Since I am Edelbrock stupid... Does that weight rotate from right to left in your picture? If so, then drilling in the red area would decrease resistance at first.

I went down this road once, went too far, had to weld some of 'em back up.

Weigh the door. Then drill hole and re-weigh the door. Keep and track weights.

Of course, this weight will change often when racing.

I just grind away the edge of the counterweight. It doesnt take much to change it.
