Power bulge hood
« on: April 01, 2004 - 04:14:43 AM »
I have a '74 'Cuda with a 318 and it has a power bulge hood.My brother thinks that those only came on the 360s that year and the 318 had a flat plain hood.Does anyone know what came on that from the factory? Was it an option? Also ,I mathed out the rear to have 3.83 gears but those were 3.08 factory if I am correct ,am I?Looking for help because this car is supposedly all factory and if it is I'll keep it that way for the sake of preserving history ,but if it's missing stuff I may as well juice it up a bit.

Ravage,

A build sheet would be a big help, but they are few and far between.  I don't think a 3.83 was an option for gears.  Could it be a 3.91?  As for the power bulge hood, I'm pretty sure you could order it in 74 on most anything.  If you haven't looked in the springs of the front and back seats, on top of the glove box and under the carpet for a build sheet yet, it's time to go treasure hunting.

I'm pretty sure the hood was standard on the rallye Challengers.

Also check under the head linner when or if you restore it, and also between the rear 1/4's and trunk on the inside, they use to be scunched into there.  ;)

At the end Plymouth got real easy with the double bump
hoods. I have had 3 '74s and they all came with them ;D

I'm going by memory now but I believe the option code
was A51 on the fender tag for the dress up  8)

In 70 & 71, I believe you could only get the power bulge hood as part of the Cuda package.  In 73 & 74, you could get it on any thing, even a slant six if you like.  There was never a 3.83 rear end factory supplied in any Chrysler that I know of.  Common ratios in 60s & 70s Chrysler products are 2.71, 2.73, 2.74, 2.91, 2.93, 3.23, 3.55, 3.91, & 4.10.  The reason for some of the numbers being so close together is that some of the smaller units, IE 7.25 ring gear, have space constraints on number of teeth you can put in it.  As previously noted by our knowledgeable friend, you likely have a 3.91 if you have correctly counted.  This could have been ordered special from the factory, but would not have been standard.  Most V8s w/ performance options had 3.23, w/ other options available.  Most 2 barrel V8s came w/ 2.71 or 2.93.    Ovmf

couldn't find the build sheet and much of the interior had been replaced so I imagine it's probably gone forever.I'll have to check the fender tag whenever I find it though. The guy I bought it from said that somebody who was looking at the car tried to steal it so he took it off ,and of course I but it somewhere safe untill I could clean up the engine bay and now have to find it.For all I know it could be the wrong tag though ,the guy seemed a little shady but I have no regrets ,I R love my 'cuda!

OK ,I found the tag decoded it but there is no code for the hood :( ,and there IS a code for a tach. which I don't have oddly enough. ,but the production number on the tag matches the VIN at 79441,even though everywhere else that I have read there weren't nearly that many '74 'Cudas produced ,does that sound right?Even the VIN decoder on this site says that's the number. There are a few other codes that I could'nt break though ,I'll toss 'em out in case anyone knows what they are.

The VIN represents all the cars made in that factory

So that number includes the Challengers, Darts, Dusters
ect

Hello 73Chal,  I did not remember seeing anything on the end of s6 in e body, but I know I have not seen one newer than '71.  I know where there is a Challenger Coupe w/ s6, & I saw a '71 Barracuda convert w, s6 at Carlisle two years ago. It did have a rally hood, but it was probably added. I do know the hood was an orderable accessory on the order form for the later cars though.  There were a lot of items available individually  outside the package deals.  I seem to remember seeing somewhere that the Cuda as a complete item wasn't available in '73 & '74, but could still be ordered piecemeal, IE; Hood as part of appearance pkg, suspension pkg, engine pkg etc.   Anyone having additional info pls add, as I am interested.   Ovmf

The 'CUDA was It's own model car from '70 to '74
All hardtops VIN start BS23

Grand Coupe disappeared  in '72...VINs started BP23

Barracudas  VIN started BH23

All 'CUDAs have the swaybar suspension but most have
the 318 after '72

No E-bodies had the /6 after '71

ovfm- yes , 'cuda is still separate complete package throughout model years.  Mine is BS23L4xxxxxxx. probably just like 360cuda's.

Ravage -  KT5  is the body color - sienna metallic I think
V6X  is probably - black vinyl top.
A6XW - is the interior/seating - probably either black or white vinyl
  BS23L4G - would be - 'cuda, 360 motor, 1974, built in St louis{?}[G]
74 'Cuda + 73 Charger Rally + $$ + assembly= Noble M400
 03 Ram Hemi 4x4
 78 Aspen Super Coupe

V6X = Black Longitudinal Stripes
KT5 = Bronze Exterior Paint (Sienna)
A6XW = Vinly Bucket Seats Black and White.
000 = Upper Door Fram Paint - None, E-Bodies had full door covers as there was nothing to paint.

# It's a 318ci 5212cc  2bbl Engine (150hp).

# It was built in Hamtramck, MI (Dodge Main) in 1974.

A few things don't make sense? There's no Sequence number which is 6 numbers long, no buoild date either.......are you sure thats exactly how the tag reads and the correct gaps have been given?

You said you decoded everything else so the only things you said you couldn't find have previously been decoded above.
Got some nice options though mate.  ;D
