Torsion bar adjustment bolt question
« on: August 03, 2008 - 07:14:56 PM »
hi guys,
i got a quick question.

on your cars are the torsion bar adjustment bolts even from side to side?
by that i mean are they wound in the same amount to achieve a level nose?

cheers,
aaron.

Hello Aaron,

Yes buddy that is exactly how it is achieved :2thumbs: but you may have to twist the driver side up a little more to compensate for driver weight.

hmmmm

that's what i suspected.

not the case with my car.

i think it's had a decent smack to the right front.
the radiator support is crooked when you look square on to the nose.
the right fender is a different colour. and it's been massaged to fit the crooked nose.
to get the nose squarish (ride height even side to side) i need to wind the right hand torsion bar bolt in a fair bit more than the left.
this in turn makes the left rear of the car squat down a bit, something that bugs the hell out of me...

i just wanted to check the torsion bolt thing to remove any doubts about their relative adjustments. ie that the right bolt dosn't need to be wound in to counter the motor offset or something...

i'm thinking i may try and straighten the nose next winter...    pull the front clip right off, junk the old mongrel fenders, straighten the rails and radiator support, then fit new fenders. possibly fibreglass ones.
might be a good time to pull the motor and check the firewall for rust issues too...

anyone have or had a crooked nose problem similar to this?

i don't mind some of the rough body work on my car (for now), but the crooked nose / squating rear issue really gets to me...

also my car (318 from factory, 318 in it now. haven't checked the code yet) has a k member with the skid plate welded on. i think only the big block k members had these correct?
might have been switched after the damage was done to the nose?

Mine are different.  Need to get it to a rack and get it straightened. Then adjust the ride height,Then alignment.  Or just rip it all apart and start over. :poopoke: I hear 'ya!

Before you go to far, remove your torsion bars & see if they are a matching pair & there are no other issues.  Torsion bars do have a left & right, someone may have put a left on your right,
my car was in an accident which bowed the torsion bar.
