Brake pads for slider calipers
« on: August 04, 2008 - 09:49:24 AM »
I have these big old slider type calipers fitted on my 11.75 inch discs on my Challenger (originally a drum brake car).

These were parts I bought from Richard Ehrenberg a number of years ago now.

They are OK but I feel the pads are a bit on the hard side and I would like to change them for something with better grip.

Can anyone tell me what year and model car these slider calipers would have been originally fitted to?
This information would make finding new pads MUCH easier for me.

Thanks.

this was a very common caliper , I use a mid 80s 5th ave , but they were used on virtually everything from 74 up into the 90s on Dodge trucks & most RWD cars , , Duster , Volare , Magnum , Cordoba , Diplomat, 1/2 tons trucks & vans

Just take an old pad as a sample to your friendly parts store, they should have a book with outlines of all pads, then you can buy a set with the right pad composition for what you want.   :2thumbs:

I found pads at Summit Racing but only one type.

Firm Feel stock ceramic pads for them.

I think I will stick with the pads I have for now and see how they work with the very slightly smaller bore "Strange" master cylinder I have fitted. Then shop around on the 'net some more if I still feel I need pads with more grab under normal driving conditions.

Here in Australia all the major brake shops have books with all pads that have been made. When I sold my brake shop several years ago I left most of those books for the new owner, should not be a problem in the UK.
I bought pads last year when I was in America picking up my car, they were a 1/4 the price of what they are here in Australia, taking up Chryo's offer might save you in the long run.   :money:

Thanks. I should have the car running within a few weeks. I will see how it goes. It has been a few years since I drove the car so I will have to refresh my memory on its braking effort.

They don't tend to be that helpful these days in the parts places in my area. Too lazy to look for you. They just suck their breath through their front teeth and shake their heads.
I tried to get a pair of BMW headlights from a dealership once for a custom I was building. They could not even look up what they had in stock without knowing the chassis number of the BMW I wanted them for!

The internet makes it easy so these days. As long as you know what you need.

I have been running a mopar for 26 years now. I started off with a 318 powered Australian Charger 770 (my first car) in the early 80s and used to try and get parts the way you suggested.
Such as the ignition points in the dizzy. I found they were the same as Aston Martin.
Fram Air Filter was had by comparing.
I also found some rear brake shoes gathering dust in a small motor factors in a little village. But the front pads I had to get from a US parts place 150 miles from me and I finally found some from a Mustang that fitted.
Those Oz cars used to be very hard to get the parts for before the Internet arrived. The Challenger is MUCH easier. Until you start customising it of course.

Is that not down to pad material though? Have you tried ceramic?

I used a premium semi metallic , it faded fast , not sure if ceramic would make enough difference or not , it just seems very inadequate when you push them that hard

They might be worth a try before bumping big money into expensive parts.

Ceramic pads are said to handle high brake temperatures with less heat fade, provide faster recovery after the stop, and generate less dust and wear on both the pads and rotors.

But as you say. How much better seems hard to tie down. Probably worth a try I would have thought though.

Run some brake air ducting. Full metalic from firm feel would be good too. But those aren't real great on the street. A 71 Charger is real heavy, aftermarket would be the best to avoid the fading. And most expensive.
