Need some 4-speed/conversion advice/suggestions!
« on: August 04, 2008 - 08:53:25 PM »
guy i ran into is selling the following from his '70 340 Duster:

Lakewood Bell
4speed trans out of the '70 340 duster
'Super shift' Hurst shifter (said it would accept a pistol grip which is what i'd run)
40# billet flywheel
13# "Hays" flywheel
Hays 3,000lb diaphram 10.5" clutch
reinforced stock clutch fork
z-bar also reinforced
large u-joint driveshaft

It is missing the linkage besides the z-bar, and the pedal assembly he says. I would also need the 4-speed floor hump.

He is asking $950 for the setup, comments?

Also will the abody driveshaft work in my E?

Thanks!

Mike if you have a 727, then your drive shaft will work. The trans is for an a body not e body. The bellhousing would work, but I have a correct bellhousing for your car. You would do better to keep looking. Even the torq bar is different

I have a 904 right now with the large u-joint 3rd member. How is the trans different, and it is unuseable in my ebody?

Thanks Al-

Here is some pic's I stole from E-Bay . The E-Body has a long tail shaft and the A-Body has a short shaft.

Even if this was e-body stuff I would pass, sounds like it was hammered pretty hard.

Ah well, thanks for the info!  My auto is limping around as it sits and am trying to keep my eye out on a decent deal. Rather let it sit broken than spend more money on this automatic  :swear:

Mike, no good ..
The only thing you can use is the bellhousing and maybe the shifter only,  the rods are different also..
But you can always fine a nice A-body car to put it in...(67-68-69 Cuda)...

Goodyman, I figure a ace mechanic such as yourself would be working one of these newfangled 5 or 6 speed setups into your hot-rod... If Kiesler can make a kit all the parts are out there.

Kiesler = Big $$$! I'd love to do a 5-speed even more so, however the cost is through the roof for a 'kit' ($4,000-$5,000 range). I lack in fabrication skills, which I have zero of! So currently i'm vulnerable to 'kits' and pre-figured things. Many 'variables' with aftermarket transmissions though, pilot bushing, flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, linkage, size/location, shifter location, etc, etc. Not saying I would have to buy kiesler's kit in entirety, stuff like a hyd clutch and such I bet I could fend for myself, the rest for a 5speed is almost best left to 'those that have been there, and built it'. I'd like a new gen Hemi in my car someday, 5speed would be perfect....can't have everything at once, I start my career the first of the year...we'll see how things pan out.

'Perfect' setup would be a turbo 5.7, 5speed, independant rear and some gnarly brakes

Just being curious I got a quote from Keisler for a TKO-600 full conversion from my auto $5,300  :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint:

Brewer's told me $3,700 for a full manual swap with a rebuilt 4-speed, linkage and the whole works..but you're still dealing with old technology and no o/d. I'd easily go the extra $1,600 for the Keisler if I could afford either. Thats still a LOT of money for a trans!  :money:

goody I'm in the same boat. I'm finding deals piece by piece. So far I have the tranny, bell, flywheel, and 4speed console. So far I've spent about 600. Look on craigslist.

Good deal, good luck with your swap! Sticking with a 4speed or more?

What about a Passons OD A833, if your not wanting to go full expense 5sp or would the cost be similar as above?

From what i've looked up their gear ratios aren't very good for aggressive driving. Seems like more of a 'cruising' setup with o/d. pros and cons to all of 'em i guess, but the cost is lower!
