Goody, I'm a budget minded individual as well, so if you can break things down into bite size chunks it's a little friendlier on the pocket book.  That's how I did it.

First thing I'd secure is the E-body specific parts; the pedal assembly, 4 speed hump, z-bar.  You can install the pedal assembly and hump in the car before you get the other 4 speed parts.

There aren't any cheap musclecar-era 4 speeds, but if you hit the junkyards and watch the '75 to early 80's Dodge Vans and trucks you might be able to come up with an OD transmission for cheap.  You may as well try it out, I know you don't like the wider ratio, but I like the OD four speeds myself.  With my 3.91 gear set, the OD A-833's 3.09 first gear (non-OD A833s have a 2.65 or 2.66) the car is a rocket ship out of the hole, and the .76 OD lets me cruise the freeway a lot easier, especially with my 26.0" tires.  Later if you decide you want the non-OD 23 spline unit, they are completely interchangable.

My local yards get about $120 out the door for a four speed transmission, but my friend once got lucky and got the flywheel, bellhousing, clutch, and OD A-833 tranny for that price!  The shifter was extra though.  Don't forget to grab the transmission yoke, it's different (larger) than the 904 yoke.

Also E-body specific are the shift rods, and shifter mounting pad.  I sucked it up and bought them brand new through eBay, the shifter rods required a little tweaking and I sprung for the billet aluminum shifter mount because I hear the stock cast ones are prone to breakage.  Same with the Pistol grip handle.

I ran an aluminum flywheel, Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch, and a scattershield, and wouldn't change it for anything.  I drive way too "spirited" to run a stock bellhousing and worry about loosing a foot or toes if something explodes.

I drove my Challenger to work today, and love it.  I wouldn't change a thing about my tranny combo.   :2thumbs:

I bought all my 4 spd swap parts piece by piece also and just kept holding out for decent deals,I think I did everything for less than $2k.Best money I ever spent on my car as it`s way more fun and I just had BAD luck with the 727s.

Kiesler = Big $$$! I'd love to do a 5-speed even more so, however the cost is through the roof for a 'kit' ($4,000-$5,000 range). I lack in fabrication skills, which I have zero of! So currently i'm vulnerable to 'kits' and pre-figured things. Many 'variables' with aftermarket transmissions though, pilot bushing, flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, linkage, size/location, shifter location, etc, etc. Not saying I would have to buy kiesler's kit in entirety, stuff like a hyd clutch and such I bet I could fend for myself, the rest for a 5speed is almost best left to 'those that have been there, and built it'. I'd like a new gen Hemi in my car someday, 5speed would be perfect....can't have everything at once, I start my career the first of the year...we'll see how things pan out.

'Perfect' setup would be a turbo 5.7, 5speed, independant rear and some gnarly brakes

Goody
Sorry I am a little late to the party but ya gotta ask yourself how much drag strip time you plan on in Vegas. I know you use to like to go a little bit (I think) and I know some 4 speed guys can get after it but most of us just suck at the strip with a stick.
With an auto ya never miss (well almost)

Short answer tries a 727 for about $500 dollars for now and start collecting parts or saving money.

If ya want a stick start out cheap maybe the newer 4-speed overdrive then upgrade to the 5-speed.
Forget the z bar set up and bracket, I would go with a hydraulic set up for the clutch and a scatter shield for the way you drive.
You would be money ahead for that 5 or 6 speed when it comes time as it will transfer over.
I like the new lighter aluminum flywheels also.

Thanks

I do agree with the hyd clutch and scatter bell for added safety. I do like my track time, i definately understand the issue with 'trouble' launching a stick at the track. Nothing some practice cannot improve upon, as far as being fun to drive...and auto and manual don't compare! A 4spd o/d, do the ones from later model trucks 'bolt-in' our cars? Same trans cross-member?

How are the aluminum flys on street duty? I'd think they would be more prone to warping.

Steal insert shouldn’t be a problem.  :burnout:

Do the truck o/d trans bolt into an ebody?

Im not sure about your last question Mike. I dont really care for the overdrive stuff. But if the timing is right and I am home, please stop by and I will give you the correct yr bellhousing for your car as a gift. If I got other stuff you put your eyes on and want, I'll let you drag it off with you. If I am not useing it of course

I certainly hope you are in town during that time. Thank you for the offer! I'll have to make sure I have some spare room in the bed of my pickup

From what I have seen the late model truck o/d 833s do bolt into our ebodies, however I hear they don't handle much 'abuse'. Running 3.91s, the o/d gear would sure be a nice addition, however the closer ratios of the stock 833 would be plenty sporty!

Thanks for the tip Al, at the moment there is someone in Texas off Moparts I'm talking to that has an E-body 833 in storage he may be willing to part with.

The Truck OD is a bolt in , you need to drill the holes for the shifter mount in the rear of the trans & maake a slight bend in the 3-4 shift rod to make it work , the trannys will take a lot of abuse , I ran the od behind the 440 in my duster race car for 8 seasons , with 1.48 60' times & the wheels in the air
you need to run the heavy 30-40lb flywheel especially with a small block , the car will not launch well with a 11 lb alum flywheel

Thanks Chryco, any specific years on the truck trans, or a link? I may poke around a couple junkyards for one since it has that overdrive gear in it.

the truck trannys were used in /6 & 318 trucks from 75-88 maybe even 90 , early ones were cast Iron case , after about 78 they were all alum , I would not be afraid to run one behind any 318 , I have one behind a customers 512 " big block with over 600 ft lbs tq , no problem so far
the front 3/4 lever will be pointing down on the OD
