Looking for 440 info

If you don't want to go to the effort of finding a new block, there are stroker kits available to take your 383 out to a 432.  Mopar Muscle covered a build a while ago and the story is available on their website.

It's an idea, but it seems like using a 440 block would be easier on the budget since custom machine work won't be needed..just a thought without research behind it yet.

Sorry - I didn't mean to send the thread into a tangent.  It was more of a question.  I know that the RV blocks had extra cooling passages in the heads, but I've never seen them.  I suppose those passages must be contained within the cylinder heads though, eh?  In other words, the coolant passages in the block are the same as 'non-RV' blocks?

Either way, you clearly have a lot of options.  If you choose a 440, just remember that they are plentiful, and should not cost much.

With that range, any of the 440s you find should work for you, even a cast crank.  If you plan to go with more than that, I would make sure it has a forged crank.

This guy doesn't want a race engine, I don't think.  He's saying he can't afford much - we're telling him about 15-thousand dollar motors. 

I think a rebuilt 440 with some minor part improvements will put you precisely where you want to be and be somewhere between, what, say 6 to 7 thousand bucks?  That's with porting on the heads, basic machine work on the block, all new gaskets and rings, maybe new pistons, new cam, and a purdy paint job.

6-7k?  Depends on where you live I guess and who you go to.  I found a guy in Melbourne, FL who will start with my block, nothing else and set me up for around 4k....that includes the 499 Eagle Stroker Kit, cam, intake, carb(s), distrib, etc.....enough to put it on a dyno and let 'er rip.

Whatever you do, don't rush to find a place.  It took me 3 different shops to find the one I could trust the most and who understood what I was looking for.  Be patient.....it will pay off.

Viperman is correct..I don't want a race engine. Taking it down the track once in a while is not out of the question, but I can't afford to go hardcore. Who is this guy in Fla that can do it for $4000???

Sounds good to me...I will start looking for a block before they get too hard to find for a good price. I will keep it on the side until I finish the body work then I can move on to the motor. Thanks for all the input.
