    well, i havent had much time to work on this car since i last posted about it. but...i did marry my girlfriend! haha! ive been so busy with work that the car has had to take a backseat since i didnt have any luck selling it. i did acquire a new roof for it though. anyways, hopefully ill be able to get on it again very soon. what would be ideal is if i could find someone around here to do the body work in exchange for me building them a new garage or some other sort of building work. im an iron worker by trade but i do a lot of masonry on the side aswell. since work has been slower than normal due to the economy i dont have the scratch to pay for the work...sucks. and im just not capable of doing the kind of body work and paint i want done on this car. oh well, maybe one day. just thought id post on here since i havent for a while and i know how some people like to see the progress.

    Most of us never wanted to do bodywork or mechanics but ended up learning to save "scratch".  The best investment I made (besides hand tools) was a mig welder, about 20 years ago. It is the 110v kind that Lincoln sells at all of the Lowes Home Improvement stores. Try to get a working used one and start building. It is easier than you think to weld.

    i have the mig welder and everything. i just dont trust my self to do the quarters and stuff. beings that i never did much body work im afraid to screw up these expensive panels. i know how to weld, i weld almost every day on the job, but the stuff im welding is super thick and easy to fix if i screw it up somehow. plus it doesnt come out of my own pocket! haha.

    I wish I could do your car for you and get a garage.  I learned body work as a kid.  Had a guy lived next door and I looked over his shoulder to learn and did a lot myself to learn the trade myself and been doing it for 38 years or more now.  I am in Iraq for another year anyways.  This time I am going to have someone to put the sheet metal on for me I think just to get it done faster while I am gone.  You have a nice project and congrats on your wedding and I am going to do the same when I get home in late feb or early mar this year.   Take care and talk to you later.  Gordon

    If you already know how to weld, go get some cheap sheetmetal and practice welding pieces of it together until you learn how to do it well enough to do some of the hidden work on your car where it won't be seen.  That practice will allow you to improve enough to do the exposed work.  If you're going to trash your old quarters, you could even cut them up and then practice welding them back together.  I don't know how to weld, but I intend to learn how someday.  That's how I intend to improve enough to do the work on my car.  Same thing with other bodywork - dent repair, body filler and paint. I'd do that now, but my wife would have an absolute conniption about the dust from sanding.

    Looks like a cool project.     I just got a MIG welder. It is pretty easy. Grinding is where it's at though.  If you want to sell any of the parts your taking off I could put them to good use.  Keep us updated as you can.    There are alot of good restos with pics on quarter replacement.I just did skins and patches on two A bodys. Take your time,You can do it. Besides,Lot's of help and advice around here.     She ain't ugly!   :grinno:

    haha, thanks, shes not ugly as some... i am a decent mig welder. im certified in mig and stick. only all i use at work is a stick welder, and you definitly dont wanna use that on a cars body! i never thought about using the old quarters as a practice pad tho! thats pretty slick thinking. i guess i may as well just dig in and if i feel im over my head ill try to recruit some local help for some tips. its just that money is hard to come by for me right now and im so scared to screw up my new panels or my car....

    To mig on body panels, you just have to remember to take your time. You weld a little, then come back later to weld a little more. If you rush it or use too much heat, you warp it. The other tip is to leave a gap for the filler to fill or else you will be grinding off your weld.

    Great start on the project.  When replacing sheet metal, I always think it is easier to replace the entire panel that it is to but weld in patches or skins.  I put the patch panel floor pans in my cuda the first go around.  This was before the full pans were available.  I did all the work and was not happy with the weld around the pans.  When the one piece floors became available, I immediately bought one and never looked back.  I think it looks much better now.  You can see pics at www.ebodyproducts.com

    Keep up the work, it will eventually pay off.

    By the way, do you have any extra cuda grille parts?
