Southern California Body Shop
« on: August 11, 2008 - 09:41:29 PM »
Hello, I live in southern California and have a 70 Cuda that I would like to have painted as well as have a few sheet metal pieces replaced.

1.) The trunk floor needs to be replaced (I have the proper metal as well as trunk braces, Year One)
2.) The metal piece between the rear window and trunk needs to be replaced (I have the proper metal piece, Year One)
3.) All window trim is off car and needs to be replaced. ( I have original trim but new fasteners need to be purchased)
4.) The car originally had a black vinyl roof but I don't think I will replace.

The problem is that I have been taken by rip off shops in the past. I.E. Had a 69 road runner sit in a shop for over a year and was stiffed three times the amount quoted for a horrible paint job. In fact I had to put the car back together myself just to get the car out of the shop. This car was originally quoted to be finished in one month. Please also note that the car was straight, no dents just a few minor scratches. I just wanted the car a different color!r

Anyway, I would like a body shop that is familiar with E Bodies and will provide the knowledgeable replacement of my sheet meta as well as a good, decent paint job. I am not looking to win trophies but I want someone to take care in providing the work for this car. I am sick of guys that say they can do this but yet have no experience with mopar restoration. I am willing to pay for a good job and I realize that quotes are generally always wrong.

Please assist by suggesting a few auto body shops in southern California that I can trust with the first car I purchased when I was just a kid (over 30 years ago). Thank you in advance.

I don't live in CA (wish I did!), but I'd like to comment if I may. Having been the son of a shop owner, an employee in shops, a manager and now, "just" a customer, I would say this kind of thing should NOT happen at a decent shop. Of course th operative word being "decent" - a manager who talks straight and doesn't over-promise, an understanding by you that the shop makes $$ with insurance work and a willingness to provide before and afters and references as requested. As well you need to know a little before going in.
I think any shop can do the work you're asking for. They don't need to specialize in E-bodies and  - if I had my way - I might shy away from smaller "resto" shops. Bigger shops GENERALLY keep promises, have long term employees and stand by their work.
Tell the manager of your past headaches and tell him/her you won't have that again. Get a firm quote to do specific work. Of course it will depend on what's underneath, but a Quarter Panel Replacement for example is (FOR EXAMPLE)14hrs, a drop-off is 4 hours, a complete paint is 12 hours, high-build and block sanding, add 16 hours, sanding and polishing clear coat 8 hours... most is by "the book", give or take a few hours, not 20! If there's extra work required, they are required to call you, show you and discuss your option. Educate yourself with the many sites on the net. Check out Autobodystores.com and ask for the times for the work you want done.
Hope you get what you want this time!

Just an update, received my first quote yesterday. $8,500 for paint. Body shop guy came to house to quote car. Is this a good price? The car has 2 previous paint jobs and I was told that the car needs to be striped down to bare metal, primed and then painted.

Whatever happened to this car?   :dunno:  I'd like to hear who you finally used and how much it was.

8500 just for painting or does that include priming and blocking.? For a complete make over with repairs it seams cheap. stripping the car would be the best thing to do and is a must, With out doing that, you cannot tell if there is any issues under that. quote is just a quote.
to get a real figure it will need to be stripped first. then do a total body assesment on every panel. this will insure a more accurate quote.
