295/50/15 on 8" rallye wheels?
« on: August 12, 2008 - 11:06:37 PM »
I got the idea for this thread from the other one asking about 10" rallye wheels. I pretty much know that without relocating the springs it would be impossible to make them look good with trim rings. I was wondering if anyone has stuck the really wide 295 meats on an 8" wheel? I know it would be hard but if it could be done it would actually pull the tire in a bit more for clearance. I am close to buying a set of 15" rallyes and would love to put some 2925/50/15's on my car without clearance issues. Anyone have any experience in this area?

Here you go.  Exactly what you asked for.  The only mod I did was use the offset rear spring hangers.  The front are not offset.

A couple more............  Keep in mind they are only 26" tall.  My car drives 5mph slower at the same RPM as with 28" 275/60-15

I'm pretty sure it can be done, BFG's site says a 295 is suitable for 8-10" rims. I wouldn't get too comfortable with 295s, they stopped producing them but are going to remake them again. But, they may stop again as well. The market isn't too big for them. 275/60s are the gold for BFG T/A Radials. So setting a car up solely for 295s is risky. I'm pretty sure 295s on an 8" rim will also increase the sidewall bulge dramatically. A 10" rim will keep it more "square" if you will. An 8" rim will bulge them out and have less tyre in contact with the ground due to pinch. I honestly don't see 295s as an improvement and would back 275s them outperforming 295/50s on the 1/4 (not track though). Mods for very little and in real world driving you won't notice any difference + the lower OD. Each to his her own though.

My friend has the 8" Pontiac snowflakes with 295s on them.  They do have a bigger sidewall bulge then my 10" Centerlines with 295s.

His GTO looks great from the rear though even if some of the meat is wasted

Actually you could fit them on 7" rims. I had a set of Cragger SST's that were 15x7 I had no problem running either my L60-15 Mickey Thompson Indy Profile S/S's OR my BFG 295/50/15.

Being able to fit them and being safe are two different stories. ;)

I can fit size 20 shoes, but I can't run in them. :grinno: Be safe, following tire manufactureres recommendations.

Actually I kinda was  :screwy: L60-15's your able to use a 7-10" rim atleast from what I read though Jeg's and Summit. The 295's .... well ok you got me there lol. But honestly the only difference I've ever noticed was the height of the tire... oh and that the 50's rode like garbage. Just my opinion. ;D

So ok to be safe go with a 8"

I re-sized your avatar HP2 so no one will have to use the scroll bar regardless of their screen size. I have never been able to see yours, I have a 17" screen too, don't have to, just did one because all I have ever seen properly is the rear end and a shed lol. Cheers. PS: Never seen or heard of 65 series tyres until now.

Thanks Carl!  :ylsuper:

295/65 is a BFG drag radial. They are around 30 inches tall, about 29 when on the car. 12 inches wide section width on an 8 inch rim.

I always have and still do like the lower profile of the 295/50/15. It even gives a bit more clearance. Hell, I have 2.94 sure grip so with a 26" tire it will be kinda like I have my 3.23's back in there  Thanks everyone for posting pics of your setups.  :2thumbs:
