Tires - Best By Dates FYI
« on: August 13, 2008 - 11:58:02 PM »

Watch the whole thing: http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

Bloody awesome info to know and I bet a lot of us never knew, I sure as hell didn't lol. I just checked the tires I got for the SRT/10 from Tirerack.com a few weeks back - phew! [1406] I now know my tires were made on the 14th week of 2006 or 2 years, 4 months, 30 days ago and if the limit is supposedly 6 years, I'm well covered.  I highly suggest you go check all your car tires. If I knew I was driving me and my passengers around on 15 year old tires, they'd be long gone in seconds.

Very interesting.  I never knew that.  I check the tires on my wifes car, which we just bought three months ago, and the are over two-years old as well.   And we got them a Costco.

Thanks for sharing this mate.

No worries guys, thought I'd share it. Now when I'm at shows, not only will I check out the tyre brand/model, size and specs, I can have a cheeky look at how old it is. ;D "I see you're running 17 year tires" HUH? ??? j/k

These DOT date stamps are very interesting.  I have heard that it is not recommended to install tires older than 3 years and that they should be discarded at 6 years!  I found out that one of my cars had tires that were 10 years old which explained why they wore heavily on a little road trip.  Here is an explanation of the tire dating:
"DOT codes are a 10 to 12 digit number located near the letters "DOT".  BTW the digits can be numbers or letters.

The first 2 digits are a code for the manufacturing plant.

The next 2 digits are a code for the tire size.

The next 3 or 4 digits are a code for the type of tire.

The last 3 or 4 digits are the date code.  The format is week/week/year/year or week/week/year

Starting in the year 2000, the date coding used is 4 digits.  That means the highest number you should see for the year is 08.  Before 1999 the format was 3 digits.  1999 and 2000 are transition years, so you will find both 3 and 4 digits.  "

Good information Carlwalski, going to check the tires I just got from the rack last year.

For some of us it might pay to plan tire compound selection based on how many miles you drive in a year. No sense getting 40k tires if you only do 1000 a year. Enjoy the softer compound which will provide better grip and handling during their lifespan. But then again if you do this  :burnout: well......   :roflsmiley:
