Thanks everyone! Sorry for the slow response - I've been working on the car.
Its a plain jane automatic (727) with a 318 that was suppossedly rebuilt around 30K ago. There doesn't appear to be anything really special about it from the fender tag. The only unusual thing about this car (maybe) is the original color was honeydew, which appears to be a goldish color (the underside of the trunk lid still has this color). Most of the fender tag decoder websites didn't know what this color code was. Found a book that had the code listed as 'honeydew' for Challenger, some kind of 'gold' for the Cudas. I don't have the fender tag codes with me, I'll try to post them up another time.
The good news is that it runs well and drives OK.
The bad news is the car has alot of rust. It needs quarters, front fenders, trunk dropoffs, driver side floorpan, probably trunk floor as well. Apparently the previous owner had some kind of accident, replaced the grill and drivers fender with 71 parts. Said he liked the 71 grill better than the 72. He had to modify the right 72 fender to accomodate the grill. The leaf spring eye on the passenger side was gone, he had an exhaust clamp holding the spring to the eye bolt.
There was transmission fluid everywhere under the car, looks like the front of the transmission pan won't seal up correclty. And theres a power steering fluid leak, but its too messy to tell from where just yet. The previous owner patched the cowl with fiberglass I think. Made a real mess up there - he cut the upper cowl metal off and then screwed it back into place after fiberglassing. That's going to be fun to fix down the road.
I installed new Mopar leaf springs this weekend, new rear shocks should arrive today to replace the air shocks. I've also got a new Mopar trans pan to install to hopefully get this thing back on the road. This site has already answered a bunch of questions for me, gotta love the search feature.
As for whats going to happen to this car, well, its entirely up to my wife. This was an anniversary present for her, she's always wanted a Challanger. I *think* she wants to return it to having all 72 parts up front, and build it up like a mid seventies Muscle car would have been. So that means stock front suspension, maybe 15" rallye wheels, intake, carb and exhaust upgrades.
Eventually the Challenger's body will get completely restored after I finish my 69 Mustang Mach 1. Its probably 1/3 done, I've de-rusted every major body panel that can be removed from the Mach1. We're breaking ground thursday on a new garage so I can completely take apart and finish the Mach1. You can see pics of its progress here:
