float level wrong? ( that is what manual sez to look at)

Since it idles fine in park, the idle adjustment screws seem to be in the right position.  I know these carbs are set lean from the factory.  How old is the carb and have you ever taken it apart to clean it?  I have this same carb on my 360.  I noticed it running lean one day becasue I have an O2 sensor.  So I took it apart and it was full of trash.  After I cleaned it, it was back to running rich.  I am not sure if this is your problem, but I hope it helps.

try raising the float level , the factory setting is too low , I think it is 7/16" , raise it nearer to 1/4"

well I have had vac leaks in the past but that usually means rough idle right?....if so this car idles perfect when in park...

I hope we can get some good feedback on this because I'm having the same thing going on. Same carb, idles great in park and then when sitting at a light or stop it idles for a little bit and then stalls.    :clueless:

where to start ?   .....how much vacuum do you make at idle in gear , possibly the springs under the metering rods are wrong , the rods need to stay down idling in gear with the top cover plates plates out of the way if they do not you need lighter springs , as I said raise the float level , 7 /16 " is too low not much you can adjust , make sure it is not flooding with dirt in the needle & seat causing it too stall , is the timing retarded too much , is there a vacuum leak in the power brake booster causing stalling whne the brakes are applied ?

couple things,
no power brake car..........prob seems to occur when car hot so my mechanic says the float needed to be lower not higher to compensate for warm fuel expanding and flooding.......did that and prob still there.....now he thinks prob may be in a worn distributor.......??????

do you think it could be?

this car has a 400 from 1972 car so it has an electronic distrib........all new ballast,resistor....

check the gap between the pick up & reluctor in the dist , it should be .008, wiggle the shaft side to side while you are in there ,also twist the rotor & see if the advance plate is free, I doubt this is your problem though

:iagree:  The electronic distributors don't wear the bushing out like the old point distributors did because they don't have the constant pressure on the shaft from the points.

If the carb was flooding it when you stop by spilling gas into the intake it wouldn't start right back up. Sounds like the mixture screws might have been adjusted with the choke half closed instead of fully open. That would make it way lean with the choke open.

replaced the electronic distributor with one from the local dealer( orig type from Restoration Parts catalog) and problem is gone...

can't give exact details cause I hate electrical issues but my mechanic said it was firing eractically....you could pull the coil wire off the distrib and a constant blue arch was there....???

anyway replaced it and now starts up much quicker and runs better....

no more stalling at stops....

excellent , often ignition problems can be disguised as carb problems or the reverse

yes now I know!

the problem was very typical of a float problem in the carb but what kept throwing me off was that the car would crank right up after it stalled...which would not happen if the float was set wrong or other fuel prob....

hope this will help others out with their problem......

I read somewhere that 90% of all carb problems are electrical.
