Help me pick my engine! Update: engine picked!!

Got a 360 for building,,spins free.. 

What's the info on it (year, bore, etc)?

Only problem I see right off is getting it from Wisconsin to CA...

In a 74 Charger, I doubt it's been opened up before, but really no way to know for sure. Was supposedly running when parked years ago. As for shipping.........  I can do it but shipping is very high right now because of  current fuel costs.

A very valid argument. I'm a little unfamiliar with all the transmission codes, what are the specs on the 512, and what could I find one in?

512 isn't a trans.  It's a stroker kit for a 440.  I believe that's what Don's planning on building for his car.

512 is the current Stroker kit I would like to put in my car once I get my budget put togeather.

Well, I had just about made up my mind to go big block, when this guy caught my eye on the local craigslist



Yup, its a 340! Casting date 9/10/68. Complete with forged crank and windage tray! Its .030 over already, with a small ridge at the top of the bore, but everything looks clean. Might get away with .040, but more likely .060. This one turns over though. All for 280 bucks! Hadn't even put it up as an option since they're usually pretty pricey, but this was a great deal. And now I can get the cool 340 stickers...

Weird to see a 340 with the truck oil pan...lol. Looks decent. If you're looking budget, be carfeul and it may only need the ridge cleand and a fresh hone. If you're going way budget. In any case, hell of a score.

Yeah, thats what I thought on both accounts, definitely a good deal. I'm gonna tear it the rest of the way down and take it to my machinist and see what he thinks. If a hone will do it, thats what I'll do, but I want to get it within specs so it'll probably need a bore. I can afford to have all the boring done, but I'd like to leave as much block as I can since I hope to have this one awhile.

Even if it costs you a few HP because of a little upper cylinder wear I'd try to leave it at .030" over on the bores. The important thing is that they're still ROUND.

  Looking at the wear and rust pattern I would definetly bore the motor, the pistons will probably be a little worse for wear also. Especially since you said you wanted something reliable.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Ridge is a little big and its been sitting awhile. If I'm not mistaken those are pretty high compression pistons (11:1), and although it will depend on the heads I'd like to end up in the 9-9.5:1 range so I can run crappy CA pump gas, since this is my street driver, so new pistons are probably needed anyway.
