72-74
« on: August 21, 2008 - 05:50:06 AM »
This site looks filled with 70-71 models.
Is there a reason that 72-74 is not represented as mush?

There are unconfirmed rumours that the 72-74 is not a real muscle car. Is that te reason or are there just less survivors, and is the later model rare?

Just wondering. Thanks.

I think if you look around you'll find that there are several members here sporting 72-74 cars including myself. Due to elavated cost in insurance and emissions regulations 1971 was widely regarded as the end of the "muscle car" era therefore more sought after and are the first to be restored. Also the productions #s are much higher on 70 & 71 cars. In a sence that makes the 72-74 more scarce than the earlier ones. I am one of the rare nuts that actually prefer the 72-74 as I grew up with my uncle owning a 72 Barracuda that started my love affair with these cars. I believe that most of us on here will agree that eventhough the big block options were gone after 71 and power #s were down a bit that 72-74 cars were still very much muscle cars!!!

72-74 cars are still muscle cars. Plenty of people here own them. The HP ratings may be lower, but they were still muscle cars. Who ever told you that ,they were thinking money cars.  My car was a 70 318 barracuda which would of been out run by a 72 340 cuda.

I myself am partial to the 72-74 cudas.  I think if you look closely you would notice that this site has good representation across all 70-74 cudas and challengers.  The 70/71's seem to get more of the external (non owner) attention but the 72-74 has an extremely loyal following that are just not as vocal.  I thought we had a poll up as to how many members owned what year.  It may have been limited to e-bods only.  Might be a good idea for a poll!

At the moment i`m restoring a 72 challenger. The thing I noticed is that there seems to be lots 70 bit 71 and a few 72, 74.

And G-man,  I think all Challengers en good condition are really expensive and great.

Gijs.... there were more 70-71 units built to begin with but I have seen an increase  of new members with the better looking 72,3,4 models joining lately.

I used to own a '72, so that is my favorite year..
it goes :
'72
'70
'73
'74
'71
But I would take any one of them in a heartbeat..
My `Cuda had a 340 when I bought it August 24th 1976
but it was a perfect motor to build up and I got 450 Hp out of it..
and if 450 Hp does not a Muscle car make.......................................

225/65/17 = 28.5"x9"  &  255/70/17 = 31.1"x10.25"

I don't think anybody who has seen my '73 on the street would say its not a muscle car.  Everywhere I go I get lots of thumbs up, double takes and nods with big ole grins on folks faces.

I must concur.  I don't think anyone on the street would call mine a "grocery hauler", although I do have a few mods.   :burnout:

I love the looks of the 70 and 71 Challengers. I prefer the 72-74 taillights, but I will end up redesigning the grill and header on my car before I'm done.

Nonetheless, I've got 30+ years of history with my Challenger, which is definitely a musclecar, and she and I will never be parted.

I like '74s the best!!  360, modern seatbelts, most had 'CUDA hoods, bucket seats, all had disc brakes safer bumpers ect  (I know I'm strange)

All E bodies are awesome though  :grinyes:

I have a 72 Cuda and I LOVE it!  At first I wasn't too fond of the round tail lights, but now I like them.  I plan on keeping my 72 forever.

Love my 72 and I can remember when a 70 thru 74 you could give em away, did not matter. Slowly the 70 was worth more and then the 71, before you know it all of the years will be worth alot, just takes time
