Transmission Jacks Worthwhile

I need to swap out my torque converter and get a somewhat higher stall. I've been dreading this job. Would a transmission jack make it easier, or are they just hype? While I'm at it, what's the best way to support the back of the engine with the transmission off? Oh, and I'm assuming that I should pull the distributor.

I have one of those scissor trans jacks thats been worth picking up. I support the back of the motor with a rachet strap between the torsion bars...works

I pulled mine out lately to take out the convrter as I got a custom one made... I have solid motor mounts and the motor barely sagged if any....

I used a flat piece of wood over the jackstand about 1foot square but it up underneath the tranny pan and put alittl lift on it... unloosed all the bolts the unloosened the crossmember bolts last.. it came down smooth and even......

If you have a complete exhaust system, it will hold the engine up.  Or a little hyd jack on a small board under the oilpan, or goodies way of corse. A reg floor jack will work under the trans pan to pull the trans back enough to get the converter down. The trans doesnt have to hit the floor unless you are benching it. 2.5 hrs and yer done if you leave it on the jack

I had to unhook my exhaust system to get to the big bolts that hold the tranny to the block... TTI headers as i unloosedend them to get them to swingover...

I purchased a tranny jack from Northertool.com and it was well worth it.  I wouldn't do it without one now.  60 bucks as I recall.  Definitely a good buy.  Would do it again.  I have used it for more than tranny's also.

they defiantly help , the trans is heavy & awkward , with a jack you can just roll it back a little & swap the converter & roll it back into place

Yep, the only issue i've had that still makes pulling a trans a pain, is getting the car high enough to roll the trans on the jack out under the car. I have to jack the front wayyy up to accomplish that. But the scissor, i think, is lower profile than like the adaptions for a floor jack and such. It's very stable once the trans is under there though.
