3.23 vs 3.55 vs 3.91 gears/ difference in 1/4 mile times ?
« on: April 06, 2004 - 03:02:05 PM »
Assuming everything else about the engine and transmission/ shift rpm points  are kept the same.

What difference in quarter mile times  are to be expected in going from a 3.23 rear to a 3.54 ?

From a 3.23 to a 3.91 rear ?

A tenth of a second ?   3/10 second ?

I have a 4 speed, 3.23 pegleg open rear end car, I hope to get some baseline times for it this weekend at the local track.    I realize a sure-grip would be helpfull as well.

It really depends on the engine , if it is built to rev & makes power at higher rpm more gear hjelps , if it i sbuilt for torque more gear can make very littl edifference , Small blocks generally respond better to more gear
 My Duster ran 12.0 with 3.23 , I switched to 4.56 & went 12.0 , it went best with 4.30 & ran 11.8 & got faster with more tuning

Chrycho- It is a question for the black Cuda we took the carb apart on when you came down for the Charger.com meet.
Basically the engine is balanced+camshaft+TTI exhaust 2.5".
Probably would gain reasonable time with better/ wider tires and adding a sure-grip.
Are you making it down for May 1st, 2nd  weekend activities ?

3.23 to 4.56 with same times ?  Something to be said for a longer pull thru the gears allowing torque more time to work ??

I kenw it was the Cuda you were working on , it will pick up with more gear being a small block, how much is yet to be determined !!
What is happening May 1 & 2 no plans at this point but it could be arranged .
The 440 pulled very hard , the 60' times changed a lot but it didn`t rpm that fast & it didn`t care how much weightt it pulled with it !! It did do better with 4.30s & may have done even better with 4.10 but every combo likes things a bit different

May 1st is Mopar Drags in Bremerton Raceway, about 15 minutes from my house. They have run it for 10+ years now. Always a good turnout, from moms station wagon, to 9 second Avenger, and everything in between.

May 2nd is Spring roundup, in Carnation ,WA , big car show, maybe 300 cars, with small swap meet, it is an hour east of Seattle. That one is well established as well.

you're welcome to stay over, TK73 I'm sure will be at the drags, along w/ some others from charger.com board.

Well, I took it to the dragstrip Friday night for "street legals" - it definitely has a traction problem with the "open" rear and older skinny tires.
I am putting up good mph times but 60 ft needs improvement definitely....
Basically am having to walk it out about 30 ft or more from the starting line.

My times.

 60 ft    1/8th        1/4       mph

3.26      12.3        17.7      93             Wheelspin city !

2.77       10.2        15.4      96.7    Easier launch,still spun
                                                      5500  rpm shifts
2.66       10.0         15.2     96.7    1300rpm launch,walk
                                                  it out,light spin,5700shift
2.72       10.1         15.2     97.6   same launch as prior
                                                    5800 rpm shifts, no spin
2.63       10.0         15.1    97.1    2000 rpm launch, stay
                                                    on throttle slightly,
                                                    some light wheelspin
                                                      5800 rpm shifts.

I'm thinking with the mph I should be near mid 14's or
hopefully better if I can get starting line traction in the future.

Maybe can shift 200-300 rpm later as well. Was still
pulling at 5800 rpm.

Lost to WRX. Lost to same WRX. Beat Ford. Beat MR2. Beat Chevelle.

Chrycho-hope to see you then, if not, maybe later in the year...

smaller gear ratio is better for top speed and larger gear ratio is for 1/4 mile
