E Body SS Spring install...

Hey all,

   I just had a quick question - in order to install the SS Springs on a '70 Challenger, I see where it calls out for offset front hangers, but I was wondering if offset rear shackles will also be req'd?? On the Mancini page, it only says B Bodies will need both...any truth to the rumors?? Thanks everyone!!

Well you don't quite need offset front hangers, you need longer front hangers since the springs are designed for abodies. Stock style rear shackles will work just fine.

The front hangers for super stock springs on an e-body are offset AND extended 2 inches. Springs in an ebody aren't parallel to the frame, they are wider on the rear for handling. Installing the offset front hangers, sets them up straight. So the picture above isn't for an e-body. It is just a stock photo.

That's not correct, I used those hangers in my 70 Cuda and everything bolted up just fine! You use the offset front hangers and rear shackles if you want to move the springs inward from the stock location, and if doing so you will also have to relocate the spring perches on the axle housing.

Just to clarify the kit Goody is showing does allow the installation of SS springs. That's OK if you stick with the stock rearend  BUT, the setup you want is the one that katfish is showing. It straightens the springs, allows the use of SS springs and moves the springs in a little less then an inch.

That allows the use of a stock 1967 - 1970 B-body rearend that just bolts right in.  The advantage is you get more room inside the wheelwell for bigger tires.  As shown on my '74

Okay, My BAD.  I just never had any friends that didn't use the offset shackles when drag racing the super stock springs.  Probably because of the alignment thing.

The offset shackles and hangers allow you to intall a b-body rear in an e-body.  If you do this you have to oblong the spring center holes in the perches about 1/8th inch and use 2 degree shims to correct pinion angle.  This is a great swap thats easy to do.

Yep, for whatever reason they put the leaf springs in crooked in the E-bodies. Supposedly for "better handling".    You might also have
issues with the brakes lines. I seem to remember having to relocate them on a customers car I did this too, but I fabricated my own front hangers, so the factory parts might clear.

     When I was using the SS's I had to relocate the fuel line. It ran under the perch. Don't laugh but I used the straight Mopar SS hangars and the offset hangars. The trick was to use the 1/2" bolts in the 5/8" holes.This allowed the the springs to seat in the perches without filling the holes. There was no wear indicating  movement, when I removed them.
