    Rebuild 2 barrel, would appreciate some input

    I'm getting ready to pull the 2 barrel carb (318 engine) of my 1970 Challenger. I've worked on many different carbs over the years, but never anything off a car. I've been into all types of lawn mower carbs. I've also done the old Penton, Yamaha and Honda motorcycle carbs. I'm sure there will be things that make me scratch my head on this one.
    The car runs good, but it falls on it's face when you try to gas it too quick.

    If you guys could help me with some things to beware, it would be great.
    I was going to get a jug of stuff to soak the carb in, then buy a rebuild kit and have at it.

    Sounds like the accelerator pump leather/rubber is worn out.

    When all else fails, closely follow the directions in the rebuild kit  :thumbsup:

     :iagree:  I rebuilt an AFB some years ago and it was pretty easy.  Of course, I've never actually used it!  :roflsmiley:

    Those are the absolute EASIEST carb I've ever rebuilt.  Just go get a kit, clean it real good, and blow all the passages out with compressed air.

    If we were talking about a Holley carb, I would say your accelerator pump squiter was too small. It sounds like you aren't getting enough gas.

    This car had some very nasty gas in it when I got it. The carb is real ugly on the outside, I was just at Auto Zone, they've got some stuff in a one gallon can that you soak it in. Looks like that little 2 barrel would fit in that can real nice.
     Is there any certain rebuilt kit that is better than the rest?

    This looks so simple, I just thought maybe there were some pitfalls I should be looking out for...................should be a no brainer..............................................

    It's really stinky, so keep it away from anywhere you don't want to smell like it for the next two days!

    I've had good luck with the "Standard" Hygrade brand carb kits, and less luck with Tomco.  But the last time was 10+ years ago so who knows, they may all be chinese made now.  There are (were)  instructions about properly treating and installing the accelerator pump (which has a leather skirt).  Also if you have a rubber tipped float valve in the kit be very careful about pressing it into the seat hard (by tugging on the floats or otherwise).  Check your choke pull-off too to make sure its operational, as long as you are going through all the work.

    You do know not to put anything with plastic/rubber into the dip, right?

    Most kits cover a few years of the same model carbs; you can get multiple gaskets for the body to horn, for example; make sure to exactly match up the gaskets that come out of your carb and get the extras away from your work area.

    Also taking some digital snapshots of the carb linkages can be very helpful in reassembly.  The kit instructions may not show all the details (you need the service manual for you car/year for that).

    DO NOT get the cleaner on your skin, it can burn you

    DO NOT breath the vapor fumes , it can cause unwanted chronic syptoms

    "DO NOT breath the vapor fumes , it can cause unwanted chronic symptoms" use in a place with good ventilation.
