Aftermarket Quarter Replacement - Need an opinion
« on: August 26, 2008 - 07:53:08 AM »
So I put a new quarter on my 73 Chally last month and in the process of blending/finishing I see that the trunk pan extension lip is shorter than the quarter panel lip (behind the rear tire at the bottom). A family member sent me a pic of his all orginal 74 (he's a member here also) and it looks like a welded accross the bottom seem. But he's in Vermont and I'm in SC - so I can just run over and compare

and I think I'm the only owner of an e-body in surrounding 100 miles.....

Okay to the question/opinion should I "wrap" the extra metal over the extension lip, or just cut if off flush?. Folding/wrapping it over seems like it would be stronger - but I'm also thinking it would make a nice lip to catch water and grime.  I'm going to have to put a new quarter on the drivers side later this year and want to do it the same way and am wondering if the other quarter will have the same extra metal (Goodmark for the curious)

Little detail - but I want to restore this car the right way

I would cut the lip on the  quarter so that it matches the trunk extension and spot weld it there. Thats how mine was from the factory if I recall right. In my case I spotwelded the panels together and after that welded the whole edge shut so the water has no way to get inside the seam from the underside, although I still have the problem if the water gets inside the trunk.

After the repairs&paint is done I would also spray some thin oily stuff from the inside of the trunk to the spotwelded seam between the extension and quarter to prevent it rusting again.

I feel the folded lip will casue more issues in the long run unless it si extremely weel seam sealed to prevent rust
