Transmission Warranty feed back poll
« on: August 26, 2008 - 12:30:10 PM »
If you had ,say.................. a 2002 Dodge Mini Van with around 120.xxx miles on it and you needed the transmission overhauled, would you pay $1500 for a 1 year 12,000 warranty or  $3500 for a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty ?

Thanks Terry "tactransman"

Obviously the 10 year is a better deal, but thats quite a chunk of $$.  Fifteen hundred is a lot of $$ for only a year, IMO.  Maybe I'm just a cheap ***, but I probably wouldnt get either.   :dunno:

My parents have had three Dodge minivans, '96, '03, and now '06.  Loved them all, but the '96 was the only one close to that mileage, it had 96,000 on it when I hit two deer 4 hours away from home.  It had no tranny issues.  RIP Caravan.   :lol2:

Do you have a regular warranty now?  Or any other extended one to buy, and are looking to change it up?

I might go with the cheaper warrenty if I had done business with the person in the past, but I have been known to look for the cheapest deal.  The $2000 difference would not be worth it to me.  I might just sell the van for cheap and buy something else.

I figure with 120K already on the clock,  something else will go fatal before you get 10 more years out of it.

This is the reason for the poll..................... I am on a transmission repair shop forum and there is a shop owner on it that is saying he has increased his sales on repairs by selling a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty instead of the 12/12,000. I find it hard to believe, all for the reasons you all have said.

I guess it depends too if you plan on keeping the vehicle. I keep mine till the wheels fall off. My last truck I had for over ten years. But this vehicle mentioned already has high miles, so I would most likely go for the 1 year warranty. If the vehicle was say a 2004-2006, had low mileage and was in super condition, I might opt for the ten year warranty. A lot of variables here!!

The way I look at it, if the trans has problems they will probably show up well before a year or 12k miles. I would take the 1 year warranty.

I agree with this. Aside from my Challenger, my brother has a Jeep pickup that my father bought the year I was born, and I had 300,000 miles on my Escort. In my family we hang on to cars a long time. Under those conditions, I lean toward the 10 year.

The other biggie is what the warranty does/does not cover. At least in engine stuff I think electronics are more likely to fail than rings or bearings nowadays. Don't know if this is the case in tranny stuff, though.

Warranty can be a selling point but 10yrs is a long was off, the trans would maybe worn out again in 10yrs which usually isn't covered.
In my mechanical business we offer 6 - 12 mths depending upon exactly what the parts or components are. My transmission rebuilder offers 12 months 20,000km, if the vehicle is returned after 1,500km and rechecked, he offers an extra 12 months/40,000km. His prices are very reasonable and he only uses quality parts in his rebuilds.   :2thumbs:

Intresting question,  but my EXPERIENCE shows that most warranty issues appear in the first 30 days. So knowing this the 12 month is more than sufficient. I personally never buy extrended warranty's on anything ... TV's Refridgerators ect. But there are people that would go for the longer one, but not many! We offered extended warranty on parts here and we sold very few, and the ones we did sell were on small parts! Starters and the like! I think we had maybe 2 customers that bought them on motors. In reality is soccer mom still gonna have the same 97 Villager (or ?? your choice) ten years from now...  :grinno:

Then recently we had a new twist on this. The state looks at warranty's as insurance policy's. And in Wisconsin (basically) they can only be handled (legally) by an insurance company! The state recyclers organization & the Wi Ins. Comission just had a meeting about this Aug 16th!

I don't know the insurance laws in Mo. but I do know that ext warranty's can be real $$$$ makers if you can sell them.

Terry hope this helps............  :dunno:       :2cents:

Ok, I am thinking the same as you guys. But it looks like the responses are for 12/12,000 what about the four people that voted for the 10/100,000? Any comments?

Usually the 1yr 12 mo wnty is what I prefer. If it is going out, it will do it within that time limit.  I am waiting now for my truck that had a new trans installed. It went out in 600 miles. A shell gear or something.  Really no body keeps a car 10 yrs anymore. If they do, it isnt run through the ringer as bad and usually taken care of. I would be skeptical about a 10 yr warranty with a bisness closing, or even making an excuse up for impropper use or neglect. Seems that people look for any excuse to get out of a warranty replacement. I see it happen too much.

I voted for 12 months. I have no problem finding quality craftsmanship and work that I could trust but if (and I mean IF) things are going to go wrong they usually, if not always, happen early on (working the kinks). If it makes it past 12 months with not a single issue chances are very high it's run and and set for good. Just normal maintenance and not being an ass clown 24/7 behind the wheel will keep things in check.
