Hemi K member
« on: August 28, 2008 - 03:08:13 PM »
Hello gang,

I am putting a '70 hemi Challenger clone together. I am told the e-body k member
is different than the b-body. Does anybody know what the difference is? Is it
something that can be seen if the two were placed side by side? What about
the support brackets that bold to the block. Different?

Thanks

The 71-72 B-body has the same architecture as the E-body. The K-member should be the same. The 70 B-body is totally different.

There is a total of six parts needed to convert over the e body regular V8  K member over to correct appearing Hemi K member.

1. You will need the pads that were actually welded onto the K member. So far I only know of one source that has those available. Mega Parts. They don't advertise them on their website. You have to send in your regular K member to them and then they'll modify it for you.  (2 needed) They also sell the other remaining parts needed for the complete conversion.  I called them and asked what is the complete cost for everything and i recall it was around $900.00 plus shipping back and forth.

2. The motor mounts. Easy to still get. (2 needed)

3. The steel mounts that bolt to the engine block. These are on first and then the mounts bolt onto them. I see these on e bay quite often. Then there's the studs and nuts that secure them onto the block needed also. a total of 6 studs, nuts, and washers.

The easier way it to buy the Schumacher engine mount conversion for $250.00 apprx.

I sure would like to go with the Schumacher setup but the decision has been
made to make this clone as close to factory as possible. Don't worry I won't
be a trailer queen. ;-)

What I have found is the d/s insulator is different for the e-body hemi '70,71
than the 66-71 b-body hemi. Hence, the question, what is the difference in
the k-members. Everything on the '70 Challenger is different from the 71-74.
It's a pain.

Heres the price just for the Hemi K member and that doesn't even have mounts or the rest of the stuff I mentioned.

'70-71 E and '71 B Hemi K Frames are the same.

I am not sure if they are identical or not but a buddy of mine used a Hemi K-frame from a 69 Road Runner in his 71 Convertible Challenger with no issues...

Hey CG,

That's good to know. The  problem I'm having is with the p/s gearbox. The head
is so close I cannot install the Hemi fitting for the p/s hose. I think I will see if I
can reposition the engine this weekend. All I need is a 1/4 more space between
the head and the gearbox to make things work. I sure hope the gearbox is not
different for the Hemi. (Sigh)
