It is funny how the pavement changes as soon as you cross the Line from good ole Maryland....  :icon16:
I like the line when it snows.  :22yikes:  :smilielol: :smilielol:

sorry, I thought this was about good shocks...not cheap ones, the qa1,s are 160$ each not cheap by any means, but a little cheaper that bilsteins, or koni,s, these are old suspensions, and pretty low tech ,any adjustable shock will help the harsh ride properties of a less expensive shock!

I may spring for the Eddelbrocks, or go cheap and get KYB.......

I just figure i owe the car a good set of shocks, I  :burnout: put the hammer down sometimes and I mostly LOVE taking turns at speed.....  :ylsuper:

Then you will be happy with the Eddies.  Last weekend on my cruise to the Poconos we were on some back twisty roads.  I was behind a Dart with the Alter K.  He mentioned how flat my car was cornering while trying to keep up.  Besides the shocks I rebuilt the front end and have an oversized front sway bar.

KYBs help with cornering by putting a high pressure gas shock at each corner. The high pressure in the shock slows the cars reaction when being thrown into corners, which makes them feel like a decent performance shock on twisty roads. This high pressure also can make them feel harsh when just dealing with road irregularities. Compare this to a true performance shock which achieves its feel through differences in internal construction and chamber valving, and you will understand why KYBs are more of a value shock than a true performance shock. They are comparable to using shackles to lift a car; they work, but are not the best way to achieve the result.

Just a change from a conventional oil shock to a gas shock will make large difference. If you are a budget minded person using your car for cruising with stock leaf and t-bars, Gas-Matics or Sensa-Tracs are the good starting point. If you want more performance and are willing to put up with the occasional rough ride, KYBs are the next step up. Moving into heavier wheel rates require more shock control. Ebrocks are probably the minimum of you have swapped to larger t-bars. After that you start getting into the adjustable range with Rancho and QA1 being the entry level in price and performance. Of course there are the non adjustable ultra performance shocks offered by Koni, Bilstein, Spax and at the ultimate end of the spectrum are aluminum body, adjustable shocks from companies like Pro, Afco, Stock Car products, Penske, and other big names. Expect to spend up to $1000 each at this end of the spectrum.

At one time, an often overlooked shock was the Mopar Performance oval track racing shock. It was a fixed valving gas shock manufactured by Carrera for Mopar. At $35 each, they were a screaming good deal, but I believe they are discontinued now. BTW, QA1 bought Carrera, so they don't exist any more.

Shocks are an often overlooked part of the suspension equation, but in reality they are much more important than most think. Look at it this way, much like a camshaft determines an engines operating range and temperament, so do shocks determine the speed, atitude, and manners of suspension system.

 :iagree:

...no horse without good feet...
I never thought about road quality  :clueless:   I guess I`m pretty spoiled. In my coutry I have no complains about that. Even the brick paved roads are smoothe enough to corner hard...( we pay a shipload of roadtax too  :faint: )  One problem we have here though is there are many roads with big trees almost ON the pavement  :eek4:
A few years ago I had a friend over from LA. He could not believe we dared driving between the trees like we do...

The flip side of that would be the area around Detroit: Wayne, Macomb and (to a lesser extent) Oakland counties. They actually have a policy that if your car is damaged because of the potholes they'll reimburse you for the expense. They never actually pay, mind you, but the fact that they have to say they will speaks volumes about the road quality there.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

Yeah here in MA they actually slipped it in another bill that they Won't be responsible for damage.LOL  They make you chase the contractor responsible for the shoddy road repair, if you can find them.

I remember when I got my Ed's they were on sale at Jeg's or summit
(?) can't find the receipt right now but it was too good to pass up. Maybe $49 each? No regrets here.  :2thumbs:

Shocker oil gets very hot and can start to boil when worked hard, that is why they put a gas pressure in to raise the boiling temp much like a radiator cap does. It then also allows the manufacturers to us better valving for more precise shocker control. It has no lifting ability as the pressure is applied evenly throughout the shocker.
The old air shocker only raised the vehicle and gave a harsher ride and didn't apply pressure to the oil in the shocker, the bag could burst and the shocker still worked but lost its extra lift. In Australia they were an option on a few new vehicles but were marketed for towing, more pressure and you leveled out the car. Of course some hot rodders used them to give max. rack to their rods.   :burnout:

When I got mine, they were offered through (of all things) Auto Zone, $64 each. I checked a couple of months ago and they're not carried any more.

I just got the QA1 single adjustable coil-overs in front. KYB's out back still. I can tell the difference between the two. Both are harsh riding performance shocks.  The KYB's are very stiff!!  Ride like a stagecoach.  I'll get the QA1 rears eventually.  I guess I'd try the Eddy's for the price. Either way, When it comes time to go...  The stiffer the better for what I do out here. But a harsh ride for sure. These roads suck too!!   I almost lost my grille chrome the other day! :-\       I'd go for a more comfortable ride for a cruiser. Like the Eddys.:2cents:
