the negative battery  cable should go straight to the left cylinder head , that is the ground strap

The negative battery cable on my car goes straight to the structure that the radiator mounts to. It does not go to the block.

Put that sucker on the block, then the neg ususally has a smaller wire that hooks to the screw post by the rad support along with a host of harness/light wires

putting the starter load on anything less than the battery cable may have burned up a lighter guage wire or throttle cable etc

I'm still going through all of this information here. I probably won't be able to start back working on the car until Tuesday morning. I really don't have a clue what the fix is going to be. I don't want to pull that starter unless i'm nearly certain that's what it is. I'm going to try to load a picture of the way this negative battery cable is attached on my car.

Currently here is where i'm at. I replaced the starter relay on here as someone suggested two days ago. That wasn't it. Yesterday evening i took both wires off the starter. I bought a new positive battery cable for the car and hooked it up to the battery and spliced the smaller wire of the positive cable to the wire that goes to the relay. The long end is not connected to the starter yet as i wasn't sure if i was going to remove the starter or not.

The other wire that runs from the relay down to the starter i'd like to replace as well but i can't find one. They don't have one at the auto parts store. I was going to make one but the largest wire they had was 10 guage and this cable looks bigger than that plus it has big rubber ends on it as well so i would like to buy it. Where can i get this wire at? I didn't see it in the year one catalog or the summit catalog.

I just tried to load the picture and it says the file is too large. How do i get it to within the correct file size to load on this site?

you can still buy the correct battery cable from Mopar for around $40, it comes with all 3 wires taped together
the problem is the ground cable , if the battery cable is not attached to the engine it will not crank over , as I said the possibily now exists that you have damaged other wiring or tthe throttle cable starting the car without the neg cable attached to the engine , you need to rresize the picture smaller to load it here

The cable has always been grounded where it's grounded. At least since i have had it which is a little over a year. Do you think that's the problem? Why has it been working with no problems?

Can you or someone post a pic of exactly where your cable is grounded to the block? Is there a specific spot on the block this is there to hook the cable to? I have a 440 crate moter in mine

Who installed your engine?  This is a very long post on a simple subject. Not trying to be the bad guy, but it seems like basic training 101 for every little check list idea to do. I am glad to help, but wish I was there to help you. This could of been resolved by Chryco, me, Stroker or 90 % of the people here in just a mater of like 2 minutes. Neil would chime in and say 10 seconds

It should go from the battery to the front of the head with a single bolt and small wire to the rad support.

How about a link to those $40 cables. Thanks

Go to your local mopar dealer in the mopar catalog under restoration you will find the correct cables for under $40.00 they can have them by wed.

The cable has always been grounded where it's grounded. At least since i have had it which is a little over a year. Do you think that's the problem? Why has it been working with no problems?

What chryco is saying is that the starter pulls a big load that small cable is too small so the electricity made its own ground through whatever it could find and may have broken(melted or fried)  something else after doing it for so long, Finley it gave out.
I hope this helps.

The good news is maybe your starter is OK.

Here's a couple pictures of where it is on my 318. Also, there's absolutely no paint on the cylinder head under the bolt.

The negative battery cable is where it belongs, there should be a ground strap to the body from the engine as well....
