17" magnums
« on: August 29, 2008 - 02:26:53 PM »
I am possibly looking to run 17" magnum wheels on my '70 cuda and was wondering if anyone else has these.  If so can you post a pic so I can have a rough idea of what it looks like?

Also, what tire sizes are you guys running with your 17" wheels?  I was thinking 275/40/17 for rear and 225/45/17 for front.  I am a little worried that the side walls will be too small.  Thanks in advance.

im running 255 / 40 zr 17,on an 8 inch wheel,4 inches of backspacing,
make sure you check the actual measurements for what ever manufacturer you chose as they vary from company to company.

too heavy,i hope they are alloy, when ever someone puts bigger wheels on there car they are adding unsprung weight, as a 15 in wheel will weigh lets say 30 lbs, a 17 inch wheel will weigh about 5 to 7 lbs heavier!i have 22,s on a ford and they weigh with tire 98 lbs!each

With a 17" rim you can run up to 5.5 of backspacing up front. Sometimes more with proper fitting. That would give you more tire to fender clearance for someone that wants to run more sidewall like a 245/45/17 or more like a 245/50/17

Read here: http://www.moparfins.com/CLAIRDAVIS/Cobra_Wheel.htm

I know this is a 69 Valiant, but he runs the 73-74 E-body/73-76 A-body spindle. Actually the Upper and lower ball joints have the same part numbers from E-body to late A-body. The clearance to the upper ball joint, spindle, lower ball joint will be the same as your E-body

I know you can run 4.5 backspacing in the rear of an E-body. I think 5" is doable with offset hangers?

There is a section here somewhere that has more pics of tires and wheels.

Here is a shot of mine with 245/45/17 F and 255/45/17 R.  17x8 with 4.5 bs

Haven't seen any with the 17" Magnums though. I think there was someone with some 20's here a while back.

here are some pics of magnums on a 72-74 Challenger that I took at Carlise in 2005. They were 245/45/17 up front and 275/40/17 in the rear. Hope this helps.

Not always true, it depends on the wheel. I had 17x8" rims on my SRT4 that weighed 15.6 pounds each and were almost 5 pounds lighter than the stock 17x6" wheels. The type of wheel is more of a factor on the weight, high performance or race bred 17" aluminum wheels may actually weigh less than the stock 15's.
