this is all i said, when ever someone puts bigger wheels on there car they are adding unsprung weight, as a 15 in wheel will weigh lets say 30 lbs, a 17 inch wheel will weigh about 5 to 7 lbs heavier!iyou have added ,a 14x5.5,which i never mentioned, you also said something about 16,s i never mentioned that either, i dont want to argue with you sir,but here is what i have from my experience, these 17,s i have on this car are from budnik,i put them on in 1996,people said it couldnt be done way back then, that being said perhaps these wheels are clearly alot thicker and heavier than the thin light weight wheels you have shown there, but here is my comparison, the tire and wheel on the bottom pic is a lighter combo,by 5 lbs,so you are right, and im right with what i have ,end of story, its over! :iagree:

when ever someone puts bigger wheels on there car they are adding unsprung weight

This statement is not true! If Bullit99 were to put 17" RPF1's on his car, he would lose 1.4 lbs of unsprung weight per wheel (44.5-43.1 = 1.4 lbs). Since a 17" wheel is bigger than a 14" wheel, the above statement is false, and has been shown to be false.

here is what i have from my experience, these 17,s i have on this car are from budnik,i put them on in 1996,people said it couldnt be done way back then, that being said perhaps these wheels are clearly alot thicker and heavier than the thin light weight wheels you have shown there, but here is my comparison, the tire and wheel on the bottom pic is a lighter combo,by 5 lbs,

This statement, on the other hand, may be true. Your 17 inch budnik wheels may in fact be 5 pounds heavier than your old 15's. I never disputed this.

But all 17" rims are not heavier than all 15" rims, and the fact that your rims are heavier does not disprove this. It only proves that you have heavy rims! If that was your point, then I agree, you're right. Your rims are 5 pounds heavier than your old 15" rims.

ok lets compare apples to apples, this post was about the 17 inch magnums, which is what im talking about,i know if those 17 inch magnums are steel they are going to be heavier than a 15 inch magnum right?
,for you to take my comment out of context of what this post is about(17 inch magnums),and find the smallest thinnest wheel that i dont think most people would use on a muscle car,is kinda ............well man geez get of my back i merely made a statement about my experience, which is real, yours is speculitave, based on assuming someone might use those wheels, when the post clealy reads 17 in magnums, and i said bigger wheels not all 17,s right?i gave you your just due in the fact that not all 17,s are heavier, but in this case with the magnums , look up the shipping weight im not gonna bother cause i know the answer., i bet even if they are alloy they are gonna be a little heavier than a stock 15 magnum, right?

Could not find a weight for the 17" Magnums, discovered that American Racing has a version called AR500s no weight for those either, but I did find a place giving the shipping weight of a 15X7 steel Magnum replica as 25lbs http://www.dallasmustang.com/prod/6060
And the popular 235/60R15 TA weighs in at 26 lbs, so now we're over 50lbs total.

.....The plot thickens.......... Come on Drewcrane, what is the weight of the 17"rs?

ok    after  2 calls to summit, and wheel vintiques, the stock steel wheel 15x7,rally ,ships at 27 lbs, the aluminum 17x7 magnum wheel ships out at a whopping 33 lbs!and that the 15 x7 aluminum wheelis about 6 to 7 pls lighter, and i quote the man said " there is quite a bit more material used to make those wheels",SO IM RIGHT ON THOSE WHEELS,now i called billit specialtys, and they back your claim that it depends on the wheel as to how heavy it will be,machining, material ,etc,so YOU ARE RIGHT ON THAT PART,however if you plan on drag racing a thin light wheel,it might not pass tech under nhra rules do to the fact that wheels do break, also if you use a spacer does that not add weight too? so thats all i have to say ,hope you guys dont throw me in front of the bus! :swear:

INDEED those 17" Magnums do weigh a lot, I also called American Racing & their 17x8 AR500 weighs 32lbs.....I guess this would be something anyone should seriously consider beforehand.
In the meantime most of the 17" styles I could find a weight for, including some other AR models, come in from 20-22lbs so there are better alternatives.
BTW when you see Shipping Weight that includes packaging which would add 1 or so lbs for the box. I noticed at one site that 7" & 8" wide 15" Magnums had the same shipping weight, I doubt the wheels weigh the same.

Magnums had the same shipping weight, I doubt the wheels weigh the same, you also have to put a decent size tire on e bodies so they dont look like shriner clown cars :roflsmiley:

Compare whatever you like to whatever you like, that was never my point. All 17" rims are not heavier than 15" rims. What someone puts on their car is their choice, I never said anyone had to use the wheels I found to be lighter. But it is not speculation, and experience means exactly nothing when you have the wheel specifications. And if it really has to be about experience, I have in fact run Enkei RPF1's on one of my cars, so I know their specs to be correct.

The statement you made was all 17" rims are heavier than 15" rims, which simply isn't true.

A 17" magnum wheel is no doubt heavier than a 14" magnum wheel. A 17" Enkei RPF1 is also heavier than a 15" Enkei RPF1. I never said they weren't, in both those cases you're comparing the same design rim to a larger version of that same rim. What I did say is there are 17" rims out there that weigh less than OE steel wheels, which is true. In fact, if a 15x7 rally wheel ships at 27 lbs, lets call actual weight 25 lbs, then you can shave 10lbs per corner by using RPF1's intended for a mustang or nissan 350z and some wheel spacers. Now that is a significant number. You would also be shaving 6 lbs per corner by using regular old 17" torq thrust II's, which I know some people on this board have.

Most 17" rims are heavier than most 15" rims. But not all. And if you take your car to the track, saving 10 lbs per corner while decreasing sidewall flex is huge, which can in fact be done by going to a 17" aftermarket rim instead of the stock steelies.

If nothing else, I'm happy that people are wondering how much their wheels actually weigh, since unsprung weight makes a big difference to the performance of their car.  :2thumbs:
