Bumper question revisited

 Thanks to all who helped me with my question determining what bumper I had on my car. The new bumper is on and it looks great (see photo).  For you guys with 74's, don't let anyone tell you a 73 rear bumper will work on your car, and vice versa.  What's behind the rear bumper is definitely different.  There are some sellers, I have found, that do not know the difference.  Some assume they are the same because of the bumper guards.  The bolt pattern is totally different, most noticeable by the outside bolt.  Although my car is a 73, the previous owner stuck 74 brackets, reinforcement and bumper on it.  Not sure why, he just did.  It was easier to replace just the bumper, than to go back to a 73 bumper, brackets and reinforcement.  I'm not a purist, besides it was less overall money this way. Anyway, until I stumbled on this site, I was not able to get anyone to verify what year bumper was on my car.  My question was easily answered by members of this site.  Thank you.

 The photo should clarify Barracuda, but it just occured to me I didn't say Barracuda. I don't know if the same situation exists for the Challenger.

similar on the 74 Chall , it has a 40 lb beam behind the bumper , different from the 73

     Where can I buy the grey plastic bumper fillers? Does anyone know if a 1970 front bumper can be installed on a 1974? Nice black-out on the '73, it still looks good (clean) without the chrome trim.

 the 70 bumper will fit with the filler removed & the 70 brackets

I really like the way you painted the plastic trim. It isolates the black tail panel and makes it look even meaner.  IMO

     Thanks, Now that I know the filler is not needed, I can store it. So, the next question is about the difference in 1970 bumper brackets and the 74 Barracuda. The thing I notice is the distance from the grill is less on the 70's, can my brackets be used (without the heavy inner brace)? You know re-drill the holes to match. The second thing, the jack slots on the 70 are missing, and it's smoother looking. 1970 bumpers are a worthy mod. and look faster!
    P.S.  I read a dozen of those old threads and one more difference are the missing top bolts, and the old front brackets can be re drilled. But the bumper is already 1/2" close to the side of the fenders, so I don't think I can leave off the gray filler strip. Maybe I will use painted a fiberglass bumper over the re-enforcement bumper, for a mono- chromatic look. I want that ARR hood in flat black with black fender and door tops along with flat black tail light panel and valances. I know I'm fixating on the bumper cause it's bent.

The conversion is straight foward if you buy the brackets and '70-'72 bumpers but trying to convert '74 bumpers and brackets to look like the earlier one is no fun. The front ones are easy but the rear ones are much harder

Also, the bumerettes leave marks and have extra holes when you remove them so they usually don't look right when your done.

  Thank's.  I wish I could take credit for painting the plastic trim , but the previous owner did it. I do like it painted. This is the second barracuda I've had, and the last one stayed pure stock with the grey plastic. I like this better.
   While I'm thinking about it, does anyone know if a well worn rear 74 bumper is worth anything, or should I just scrap it? There's rust scale on the inside, and the outside needs rechromed, but it is however straight.

Nah..  I would keep it for the car in case you sell it.  I have several in the rafters of my attic. Just in case
