I have been having some issues with overheating since I put on an eddy rpm airgap intake. I checked the timing and it runs good at 22* btdc,  no detonation on incline under load. I am thinking it should be around 10* at idle. anyways, initially, it was at 16* when I started messing with it. The temp gauge sets at 200-210 at highway speed with 3.23 rearend. It tends to rise in traffic. The timing chage to 22* did not change the temp problem. The radiator is new autozone, the fan is new clutch type 6 blade autozone as well. It has a shroud. I envy the guys on here that run 175- 185 at the track. Any ideas??

You can probably get it to run just as good at 16 instead of 22.  Each time you change it you will need to adjust the carb to clean up the idle.

What is your total mechanical advance?  You may have too much if it is a stock distributor.

Also that looks like a 22" rad and the shroud is blocking the corners?

Rebuilt 73 340 stock compression 8's, rmp airgap 750 performer carb headers stock distributor. You think the corners being blocked are causing some blockage. It never ran over 200 intil I changed intakes.

i dont see how changing intakes would matter.... something else is wrong..... did you put in the thermostat right or change it.... how are your hoses....  :working:

start the car and open the radiator cap and let any air pockets out while the car is running....   :working:

It could be lean, what t stat you put in it?

Did you get all the air out?

How about a new sending unit?

Just trying to get an idea here.

What are the rebuilding specs? What bore is it? What rings? the shroud is not helping. I would just remove it for now. If it ran at 200° when it had the other intake, it was already running hot. You need to know why. How was the block originally cleaned?

.030 on bore. All new hoses, t stat is in correctly. I made the shroud on the fly after work one day. It looks like its blocking about 1/4 of the area. Theoretically if I remove the obstruction, it should lower the temp by 1/4.  I will burp it and open up the shroud and let you know. the theromstat is 180.

It looks good, just needs to be moved away from the rad a bit to draw air from the corners.

How did you weld the round part?  I've been wanting to do mine to clean it up a bit.

I opened up the shroud and set the timing at 16* initial. It ran at 190* on the hiway at 60mph. That's about right isn't it? I have a miller 185 and a spool gun for aluminum. Just use straight argon and .035 4043 wire to weld it. I cut the shroud from a sheet, I think it was about 13ga or so. Been welding aluminum for years. I will try to post some pics tomorrow.   :burnout:

definatly better , you are only 10* hotter than the T stat & the t stat could be out by 5* or more if it is a cheap T stat

Spool gun is best for most aluminum.  It is classified as a GMAW process (gas metal arc welding, or mig process.) It uses your existing mig welder in most cases. I have two pics here. One is the cheaper miller and the other is the more expensive one. The Spoolmatic is the better, the spoolmate is the economy version. I used both extensively. If you don't plan on using it for heavy production, get the spoolmate, it will do just fine. I have a sample of the spoolmate welds. I am off work this week, but when I return I can post pics of the spoolmatic welds- very little difference. Spoolmatic  is 100% duty cycle and is very good for an air cooled gun, Spoolmate is of a lesser duty cycle. For production use I would get a water cooled gun, but we are talking about 24/7 use. There is no reason that someone doing light work can't get by well using the cheaper of the two.

Get the length right and the thin al will bend naturally in a circle, kinda like coiling a piece of paper in a circle, the aluminum won't kink easily. then tac it together. I haven't seen anyone braze al, I have heard it used to be done.  :dunno:

Thanks, I got a shroud but it came with pop rivets/angle brackets and I wanted to clean it up a bit.  Didn't want to invest in a new gun for that.  I had seen some AL brazing rods at the local supply and wondered if they would work since it isn't a structural thing. :dunno:
