installing green bearings
« on: September 02, 2008 - 07:22:53 PM »
hi guys,
my old tapered roller bearings are stuffed, so i got a green bearing kit to replace em. i know heaps of guys say don't use the ball bearings due to longevity issues, but i
had trouble finding stock style kits for less than a hideous amount of money, and i know people running the green bearings without issue. plus i need to replace the bearings
before taking my car on a road trip next weekend, and there was no way i could get a stock type kit in time.

so basically i'm asking anyone who has experience with installing the green bearings if they have any advice etc...
i know some people find they need to shorten the axles by up to a 1/8 inch sometimes. what do you do about the old adjuster? just bolt everything up tight?

cheers,
aaron.

I've not installed them myself, but I think you have the correct info. You made need to skim a little off of the ends of the axle shafts to get them to fully seat. And the adjuster is no longer needed. Maybe someone that's installed them can give more input. You've got the jist of it!!

I thpought Shelbydogg had a # for the bearing & retainer for reasonable price , as long as you are careful you do not need the endplates & adjuster new
anyway yes once you go to green brgs your axles will no longer work with tapered roller brgs as you will have to shorten the axle /14" or so or remove the gear set & remove the floating block  or buttons & you will not need to shorten the axles , the factory end plates are discarded , you can send them to me if you want , the green brg comes with steel end plates , just tighten them up & go

The original tapered seat bearings aren't too expensive.  Here they are at Oreilly Auto Parts for $14.99. The always come with a new retainer ring.

Any real auto parts store around you should be able to get them the same day from their warehouse.

bolted the axles back in last night. no problems. no more bearing noises. now i'm left with all the other whines, rattles and creaks...
didn't have to trim the axles either. maybe that's an issue with suregrip centres? i wish i had that problem..  ha ha

and the old retainer plates look pretty good, so may still be usable if i decide to go back to roller bearings.

now i'm off on an 800km road trip tomorrow, should be fun!

cheers,
aaron

My clutch style posi makes creaking noises. The only way to cure it is to kill a whale and put the real additive in it. I just live with it.
