A while back I started a thread about a 70 Challenger that I picked up. Originally a 340 (A66), console auto in sublime with a black interior, black bumblebee stripe, and A/C. It is missing the drive train but the rest is there and it's pretty solid. I did a bit of research to see how rare the car is and didn't get any definitive answers. I had initially written off putting a 340 in the car because they tend to be tough to find and expensive. Plus, I have a lot of stuff left over from my Barracuda - including a 5.9 Magnum and 5.7 Hemi (both with low miles). I figured a modern engine with good brakes and suspension would be just as much fun as a stock restoration.

Well, here's my dilemma: I found a complete 340 that's within about a month prior to my car's build date. While it will never be "numbers matching" and it's not quite "date correct" it is the right year with all the original parts on it. This makes the cost much more acceptable (although I'd still have to track down all the other correct engine compartment items to match). The engine just needs freshened up but I could upgrade the internals while I have it apart so that it looks stock but has a bit more punch to it.

I am a fan of stock/restored cars as well as modern technology so I'm not particular about which way I go with this car. If the car has some sort of historical significance I'd like to make it as original as possible but, if not, then I will modify things a bit. The cost for the 340 is on par with the 5.9 - although the 5.9 will have more power just because of the heads and intake. The Hemi is the most expensive and difficult route but probably the most streetable when finished. I do drive my cars a LOT. I think I'll be happy no matter which direction I choose but what would you guys do in a similar situation?

...if you like to attend car shows, go 340....if you just wanna have fun, why not do the HEMI....either way, it is a very KOOL car and color combo

I've been wanting to do a modern hemi drive line car, so this sounds like the way I would go but as my wife will tell you, I am not that bright when I get ideas lol. I think if you drive it alot and even cruise nights the hemi would be cool to show and a blast to drive.

Being someone who owns an A66 car that I am getting ready to do a full restoration on (4 speed plum crazy white interior/bumble bee stripe) I vote for installing a 340 in it. I love to drive my cars as well and haven't had any real problems with reliability, or dependability with the old technology. At the end of the day it is your car and you should do with it as you want, but if you are planning on taking it to Mopar shows and drop a 5.9 or hemi in it you might catch some guff from some purists.

IMO, go 340 since it was a 340 A66 car and you like stock cars.

Besides, 340s are more hard to find, have more "history" and image behind them.

My 2 cents
Dont worry about originality, once the drive train is gone no ones cares. Slap a BB or hemi in it and have fun. Its pointless to worry about getting everything original when its not numbers, in my opinion.

All the value was stripped out of my car so I am going the hemi route.

Oh....I am not a particularly bright man either!! 

If you do decide to do the Hemi, there are a few of us here currently  doing the same thing and comparing notes to help each other out.  Join us!!  I'm not sure if it a case of "all great minds think alike" OR  "misery loves company"!!  :roflsmiley:

If the car's originality has already been compromised, my vote is for the Hemi.

Modern Hemi conversions are going to be like Hemi clones-you-ll see a lot of them.An A66 340 car will be fairly rare and just as much fun IMO and unless somebody actually checks the numbers they`ll never know if it`s macthing or not.

it really doesn`t matter which way you go any of the 3 choices will work , I would build what you are most happy with , the 340 can be installed at any point down the road if you use the Hemi or 5.9

I would go the 340 route as both my Cuda and Challenger are 340 cars. They give me very little problems and I drive them both where ever they go. I drive the Challenger to the Nationals everyear which is 450 miles each way and never have a problem and it has AC for the hot days. A Hemi would be nice but the A66 are cool and will always stand out in a crowd.
