removing a 73 grille
« on: September 06, 2008 - 09:22:02 PM »
Can anyone offer some advise for removing a front grille from a 73 Barracuda? Does the bumper have to be removed first? I need to repair a crack, and want to work from the back as well, so it has to come off. How many places is this thing attached? I know the headlight bezels need to come off, and I see four obvious screws along the top and two small screws in the lower corners, but there must be something else.
I forgot the best part. My bumper was hit by someone just hard enough to damage the grille, and not a soul knows how it happened. Fortunately the bumper is still good with only a slight crack in the chrome near two of the bolts, but the 35 year old plastic didn't like it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had someone damage their car, and not confess to it.

Pull the bumper. The light buckets too. There are small screws along the top.And one in the center. They come out fairly easy. I see you have the filler strips still. I removed mine and re-drilled the holes in the brackets.

Oh yeah...   Welcome to the site!

The grille is off. As soon as I get some time I'll repair it. It is a little worse than I thought now that I can see all of it. I took the valance off first, loosened the bumper by removing two of the three bolts per side, then lowered the bumper, and the grille came out easy. With everthing apart I also noticed some other very slight damage to metal parts. Fortunately it is not anything you can really pick up on. I'm going to go ahead and take the bumper off and then restore all the pieces up front, and might as well paint in there now too. It never ends does it.

Nope.   :grinno:

Glad you got it off.  I painted mine a stainless steel color. A tad darker.

are you going to paint around in there black?  Personally I don't like the bumper guards and filler strips.
It will look great cleaned up!  :2thumbs:   Getting ready to tear mine apart too! :drunk:
