  Hood, sorry about your loss, have had to do same recently. Pets become part of your close family, they are so loyal. Just think of him running free with plenty of other friendly dogs and plenty of trees to pee on.

Each one takes a little piece of you when they go, but they also leave a little piece of themselves with you. You gave him love, and a good life, and that's all that any pet hopes for. I'm sure, if he could, he'd ask you to do the same for some wistful soul trapped in an animal shelter, looking to be loved.
