What goes "pop" over 5000rpm
« on: September 09, 2008 - 10:56:09 PM »
Coming home from cruise night tonight I lined up beside an older vette at a stop light. The light turned green and we both left moderately hard.  :burnout: Manually shifting the automatic from first to second I heard a distinct POP and there was a plume of oil and coolant coming out the rear. The Ventura and Formula Firebird behind were reasonably covered with rapidly escaping waste.  I regretfully pulled over and called for help with a trailer. We found that any fluids poured in the top quickly came out the bottom. Ran the car onto the trailer and hauled it home. Parked the car in the garage and got a drink and came on line. :walkaway:

Oh yeah , I beat the vette. :naughty:

Why didn't you go with EFI? I love driving my EFI cars, especially cross country. Easy start, no leaking holley carbs, no cylinders being washed down with fuel and decent fuel mileage. So far we have a 5.9 magnum cuda, a 5.7 hemi cuda and now we're building a 6.1 hemi superbird clone. Only carbs around here are on our all original cars. They sit a lot.

Regardless, I can't wait to see the new engine installed in your car. You'll love it. Keep us posted.

Since it was dark last night and couldn't see much we just left the car in the garage.I came home tonight and started poking around a little, I may have got off lucky.
Poured some water in the rad and it was coming out the bottom of the waterpump. Checked the dipstick and the oil was clean. The plugs were the proper brownish tinge. Fired the engine up briefly and no knocks or unwanted noises. I think it was only coolant and no oil had actually escaped. The clutch fan has about 1/2 inch play side to side. It might only be the pump.
Last night was supposed to be the last ride and to use up some gas.
The bodyshop wants the car in three weeks so this weekend I'll start taking it apart.

hotrod98; I won the hemi at Moparfest last year so didn't have a choice on EFI.

If it's a small block it could be the timing chain cover
