Super Stock Springs
« on: September 12, 2008 - 05:48:45 PM »
I've been a little busy these last few days. I installed SS springs and all new brakes on the Duster. This started out to be a brake job and after looking at the old springs being bent turned into a rear rebuild. The back plates were on the wrong sides so the park cables faced the rear. The shafts were on the wrong side also. The rear ujoint was missing most of its needles and was way loose. I also installed a sure-grip it there also.

Cool , it is amazing how bad condition some of these cars end up in before they get looked at or just reassembled incorrectly

I think it's worse with Mopars. Every one I've ever bought I've had to spend a month just correcting the screw ups by the previous owner.  :pullinghair:

Looking good!  Im a big fan of the Dusters.

Does anyone know how much of advantage you gain by adding the SS Springs to an E-Body?

A ton.  Even with small slicks I'll bet they are worth 3 tenths in the 60 foot time and almost a second in the quarter with a car that was slipping before.

On the Aspen you could do a small burnout, rev the trans brake to four grand and just let go of the brake button.  That sucker would stick like flypaper was on the starting line.  High 1.50s on the sixty foot time in a very heavy car and a stock eliminator 360 engine.
In the Valiant bracket car the best sixty foot times were in the 1.40s with the high compression 360.

Home made SS springs on the Aspen and A body SS springs on the Valiant

I think I'm gonna go with the mono-leaf & Caltracs.

I would try them but I already have some extra SS springs lying around.  I even have a set of A-bod Super Launchers that I never even tried.

The thing about cal-tracs is that they were originally created for GM and Ford leaf springs that are much more symetrical in their layout than a Mopar spring. Look closely at the front of a cal-trac hanger and you can see that when they start their pivot action, they essentially turn a standard spring pack in to an SS pack by shortening the effective length of the front segment several inches. You can tune a cal-trac to create this adjustment faster or slower than you can with an SS spring pack, but the net result is the same. It also is easier to tune a cal-trac by simply adjusting the bar length, whereas tuning an SS spring requires adding/removing pack clamps on both the front and rear segments and is a much more time consuming method.

Another thing is if you have an SS spring pack tuned correctly, you never need a pinion snubber either. The whole means by which an SS pack works is by creating body separation. If the pack is doing its job, the body lifts away from the axle and the snubber is simply left hanging in the air.

Ken,

Those wheel adapters are for Chevy and Ford guys.

I had a friend that used some in the late 70s.  He and some friends were cruising down the highway and started to hear funny noises at the rear end. They slow, pull to the side,  and stop. As soon as it stops, the left rear wheel lays over, with that aluminum adapter broken off at the studs.  Please get the proper wheels before we lose a good member.

The back plates were on the wrong sides so the park cables faced the rear. The shafts were on the wrong side also.

When I first bought my R/T in 1980, The brake adjusters and torsion bars were on the wrong side.
1. The torsion bars would not adjust to get enough height.
2. When applying the brakes in reverse, the brakes would gradually loosen themselves instead of tightening.  Try to troubleshoot that problem when you are a 19yr old.
