Intresting post on dyno tuneing. My uncle was a carb and tune specialist at a gm dealership for about 40 years. Dyno... ppphhhttt he had his hands and his ears. I used to stop in by him at the dealerships when i was a young man. He'd rebuild a quadra -bog right in front of me and never take his eyes off me. He had no exotic equipt. And did great work, I wish I knew and had the skills he had!  No way would he miss a bad wire or plug.

There are still a few of us oldschool mechanics left. I have done all my tuning without benefit of dyno, for 26 years. I don't NEED a dynamometer, I WANT a dynamometer. As it was previously stated, a dyno is a tool, and a good tool in good hands is a wonderful thing. The fact that an untalented hack was wielding this particular tool, should not put you off of doing a proper dyno-tune. A shop that offers a dyno-tune should also offer the parts and the skills necessary to achieve the desired-for results. Just having a dyno does not make you an expert, and you either need to bring tools, talent and tuning parts with you to a place that has offered you dyno TIME; or you need to go to a reputable shop that knows how to tune a car that is strapped to a chassis dyno. "Dyno" Don Nicholson did not get his name by screwing up people's cars- he acquired the name by offering a service to his customers that was worth every penny.

I prefer an engine dyno myself with a new motor. I was lucky enough to have a friend that knew what he was doing with his and let me use it for a week (he owed me some major favors) You can break it it, dial the carb in using the EGT's and if you decide to swap anything it's a whole bunch easier on the dyno cradle than in the engine bay. When you drop it in the car you know it's right. If you later use a chassis dyno you'll know the losses from the drivetrain without any guessing.

Like others said, the dyno is a tool. Just because someone has one, doesn't necessarily mean that they know how to use it. Or work on cars.

I believe it was the guys running the dyno that were running a scam.  Too bad there are so many outthere like that.  I never used a dyno to tune my engines.  I ran my car on a dyno myself just to find out what was going to the rear wheels in horsepower.  I am ASE Master and I am an instructor in the automotive field.  I just wish the guys at that shop would treat people the way they want to be treated.  Then they would not be doing what they are doing.

A dyno is a great tool to see if the parts you add helped or hurted and to see where you can go.  Also knowing where your power curve is is extremely helpful for the track.
Before  I dynoed my car, I was shifting at 6700 rpm, after dyno, it showed by 6700 I was way out of my power band.  Shifting now at 6200 and it brings me right in the middle of the torque curve after the gear change.
This is with my 06 Charger Daytona, 374 rwhp, 386 lbs.-ft.

I agree , I use a local Dyno guy & he has no interest in selling parts so there is no motivation to fudge the #s , when we find 25 hp which is usualy the minimum you can feel it
 I recommend you find an independent dyno like I did that doesn`t sell parts or work on cars , when used correctly you will get results
