Some "kill" stories to share
« on: September 14, 2008 - 07:06:11 PM »
Although I have never managed to land an E-body (yet!), I still have driven mostly hot MOPAR cars over the years. My last A-body Barracuda has been the most fun. These are my two favorite "kills" in my current toy. When my 'Cuda had a 383 built by me to 425 BHP, and a 727 and 8.25"/2.71:1 geared rear, I had some excitement while taking the kids for a visit with their grandma. I pulled up to a red light, waiting patiently for my chance to turn left on the green arrow, and thinking, "Cool! I will be able to buzz the 1/8 mile up the hill to the turn, because I am first in line." It is a two-lane left turn at this intersection, and another car pulled up to the light next to us. My wife turned to me and said, "I think he wants to race you." I turned and looked, and saw a Ford Probe Turbo. I laughed, and said, "You must be kidding! He doesn't stand a chance!" "You should hear him," she said. I told her I couldn't, as the car we were in was running, and she is a trifle throaty. "I think he's serious," she said. I looked again, and this driver was in his late 40's, wearing driving gloves, and looking at me like he could kill me as soon as drive against me. I told the wife that I couldn't, not with her and the kids in the car. Besides, it was just a Probe! Who was he kidding? The kids started yelling for me to do it, and I just kept shaking my head.Well, the light turned green, and he took off with a little tire chirp and quickly put a length on us. I wasn't going to, but now the kids and the wife were screaming for me to do it. So, I left it in low, and laid into the throttle heavy. I made up the car length before we had turned the corner, and left him about 10 car lengths back. I was turning onto my side street before he could catch up! The second story with my 'Cuda is after I had rebuilt the 383 to 450 BHP. The gears in the 8.25" diff were now 4.10s, and I had also installed a Superbird wing on her by this time. I was cruising down the road on a Friday night, and pulled up to a red light. A BMW 740 convertible pulled up next to me, in the right lane. The college kid in the driver's seat looked across at me and sneered. As the lights started to change, he revved his engine and got ready to leap. I figured, "OK, time to show you what a $4000 car can do." I put the shifter in low, and we took off together. The run was only a block,as the next light was also red, so I figured it would be short and sweet. Boy, was it! I left him like he was standing still, and was waiting patiently at the next light when he finally got there. He wouldn't even look at me when he got there, just made a quick right turn and skulked away. I love doing that to expensive cars.

I had also installed a Superbird wing on her by this time.

This alone makes me say  :useless:

:iagree:  I was going to say they must have thought you were Mel in there.  It may not have an expensive paint job, but it definitely looks very cool and has its own unique flair. :2thumbs:   I'm sure you grab attention anywhere you go with it and it sounds like you have the power to back it up.

Thank you all for your kind words. I have a passion for this car, and she is a member of my family. I don't know if 470BHP on E-85 is a lot of power, but it certainly makes my life interesting! I have ruined a rod bearing twice now, because I can't seem to lose any weight on my right foot. I kept the engine at 7000 rpm for a little too long, and sucked the pan dry. I now have to pull the engine, fix the oops again, and make an 8-quart pan out of my 6-quart pan. I will then have 10 quarts in the system, and will then have a little more cushion between my heavy right foot and the ugly noises. Here's a view of the back of the car, showing the bumper stickers I currently run (did you notice the "Hot Wheels" flame over the "v-eight" emblem?). Note the "Road Warrior" sticker prominently displayed. I got this one in response to the constant comments about her resemblance to a car from that string of movies. Another "Mad Max" feature, is a 36-gallon fuel tank stuffed into the rear of the car, that fills through the original filler.

Thank you, Challengeher. I like his car, too (and your car is gorgeous!). My car uses a pretty special part, though. The wing on mine is a real Superbird wing, from the car that was an interceptor for the New Mexico State Patrol. Somehow, the wing was separated from the car in the late 70's or early 80's, and wound up on a 1970 Superbee that I purchased in 1985. After the untimely demise of my 'Bee, I removed the wing and stored it. When I decided to install it on another car, I pulled it out and started stripping paint. That's when I saw the most unusual succession of colors, and I had a light go on in my musty brain. Re-reading the only piece I have left about the "Blackbird", I saw the same succession of colors listed for that car. If anybody wants to re-unite the wing with the car, it will require the surrender of the Superbird to me- I will never give up my cool wing with the cool history.

Thank you very much. :2thumbs: That is really interesting history about the wing. The pic of the Barracuda was taken at Carlisle many years ago. The car is from a movie called Corky's Cuda.

I'm pretty sure it's the same Barracuda pic, that I posted. The one from Corky's Cuda.
