Fuel Pressure Guage
« on: September 14, 2008 - 07:12:46 PM »
Just installed my new Edelbrock carb and my fuel pressure guage is reading 9.5 and the guys at the local speed shop are telling me it should not be over 6.5. is this correct? Do I need to install a fuel regulator? What would happen if I left it at 9.5?

Thanks in advance.

you need 6.5 or you could damage the float needle and seat just for starts. Put a reg on it.

Run a pressure regulator. The fuel pressure should be below 7 psi, and the closer you can get to 4.5-5.5 psi with no running problems (i.e. fuel starvation at high rpm), the better. The needle valve will be forced off of its seat in the inlet, flooding the carb with fuel, and possibly bending the float arm. In a worst case scenario, the engine gets fuel poured down its throat, and it hydraulically locks.

What type of fuel pump are you running??

Even my Hi-volume mechanical that is supposed to put out 6 PSI, is closer to 9. I run a regulator, along with a fuel pressure gauge on the line. That way I always know what's up.

What are you guys running?

Is your fuel regulator attached to your fendor or your firewall?

I run a Carter electric pump, and a Holley regulator mounted on a bracket attached to my intake manifold. My pressure is set to 4.5psi, and I have had no problems. The closer to your carb that you can run your regulator, the better.

becareful on some gauges.  I bought a new one through summit and it consistantly went down to 2-3lbs. after warm up.  I looked at everything and couldn't find a problem.  Changed back to my old gauge and boom the pressure was normal.

As mentioned, if you are using a liquid filled gauge, it varies greatly with temperature. I run a gauge on the outside of my car with 7psi (regulated) to my edelbrock. No issues
