Advice (opinions) needed
« on: September 14, 2008 - 08:57:28 PM »
Hi all,
I had a 73 Challenger for my first car.  I've wanted one since I was 9 yeras old my total favourite car! Guys in highschool used to laugh when we all sat around dreaming of "if you could have any car you wanted what would it be" I would say a 1970 Challenger. I did have my dream car they haven't!! I'm now 40 and am GOING to have another one! I want a 70 this time though! I'm in Canada :canada: 60 miles north of Toronto. I've been looking for about 6 months now, e-bay  etc... I work as a tech inspector at my local stock car track and a racer overheard me talking about wanting one. He came over and said I have one thats been sitting in my garage for over 15 years and I'll never finish it. I couldn't believe it! So I went over and "looked" It's literally a "basket case" the car is totally disassembled everything is in milk crates . It has new floors and trunk floors  already painted top and underneath ( hemi orange )  The  main body is really solid it needs new fenders and hood and trunk lid and total interior it has the 4 speed pedals installed. It's a 318 car.  It has a 4 speed with the pistol grip shifter and 3 sets of doors and 2 R/T hoods but they all look rough. He says he has a new headliner and seat covers ( didn't see them yet) He said if I was serious he would drag it out ( the car in in a shed) and put it on a hoist so I could have a real good look at it.
I don't care about # matching I'm planning a 6.1 hemi with a 5 speed or 6 speed. I plan on building my own tubular k-member and other mods.
My question is what  would be a fair price? I was thinking $4000? I know basket case cars cost lots to get all the pieces but finding a solid shell is a "problem"
Any thoughts?
Thanks Brad

Hey Brad

$4000 cdn sounds like alot because all the pricey parts are damaged or missing. Interior panels, hood, fenders ect will set you back a bunch.

On the other hand if he played his cards right on Eblay he could probably make more

The main thing to find out is how is the grille and related parts.  Also, is the front frame straight?  What about trim?
I would first find out and if everything looks OK then fish around for a price.

It all just depends on what the buyer will pay and what the seller will accept but you knew that

Thanks sorry I don't have any pictures as of yet. He says all the trim is there but..... I would have to see it all of course! I just figured $4000 would be a fair price assuming it's all there. All the Challengers I've looked at so far have all needed 1/4's, fenders, floors ( both), and trunk lids so I figure it's a safe bet 90% of all of them will need these parts. On the other hand I've seen on e-bay Challengers with the correct or desirable #'s and tags go for crazy money with tree's growing up through the middle of them! I would have given you $100 for?? This one doesn't need floors or 1/4's so I'm maybe ahead of the game??? Again I couldn't care less about #s matching or playing the fender tag or build sheet game. Just want a solid car for the best money? Who doesn't I know!! LOL

If you can afford 4k then fine. I paid 7k US (plus 20% exchange) for a 318 challenger all complete then ended up replacing the quarters, deck, trunk lid and whell houses and front floorpans.

also this 70 roadrunner sold same day. http://www.biddingatauction.com/listings/details/index.cfm?itemnum=818044829

This one looked like a good buy? The Challenger is surprising though! Looks like it was pretty solid though? Looks like someone had started body work? Thanks for the tips! The one I'm looking at is 10 minutes away so no transportation costs/time off work, for the right deal that's not an issue though!

Welcome to the site, Brad!  For that price, I'd say it's a good deal to pick up.  Mine's been a "basket case" since I've started college (going on 5 years now), and with less overall work done I'm already sitting at around $10,000 into everything I've had done/purchased.  It literally looks the same as it does in my signature photo, so a '70 with the body already set up for $4,000 sounds amazingly reasonable. :2thumbs:  Good luck with your decision and car, should you choose to purchase it.

I was talking to him at the track( stock car ) last Saturday. He said he has $4500 into it. In around 2 weeks I'm going to go over and help him drag it out  of the shed and put it up on a hoist and have a real good look! I'll try to remember my camera.
