Hello from ny1971challenger
« on: September 17, 2008 - 09:39:15 AM »
Hello fellow Challenger and 'Cuda fans. I just joined the forum after buying my second 1971 Challenger. The first was back in High School in '79 when I was 15; it was a field car with all kinds of rodents living under the hood. Unfortunately it's long gone, sold it for parts after the engine and the tranny blew apart while racing a friend.

It's been a few years but I just picked up another field car special last weekend, a 71 Challenger 383 R/T clone in need of some serious interior work and some body work. The engine runs great but it stalls when I put it in gear (an automatic). Hopefully just a vacuum problem. Now that I'm all grown up and have a job I might actually be able to fix this one up, just gonna take time and money as you all know, but I can't think of a better car to fix up. The most beautiful cars ever made, I think.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi.

Sounds like we had a similar beginning. I bought my Challenger in the late 70s when I was 16, but lucky for me I still have it. Welcome to the site. You'll find that we love pictures, so let me be the first to say

Here's a few of the "before" pics, someday I'll have some "after" pics to show, I hope.
Sorry about that blurry interior pic, too much nicotine apparently, I gotta take another pic. Anyway, there's a big hole in the floorboard so that the squirrels can get in.

Welcome to the forum ny1971.   Doesn't look like it was in the field too long.  A good project to keep you out of  mischief.    And yes we do like pics.

Thanks for the welcomes. Pics? More? I have more.
First some more info. It's a 383, not an original R/T, originally a 2-barrel, somebody put on a 4-barrel Holley before I bought it. Automatic transmission. Somebody put a rear spoiler from a '72 (maybe?) and botched it up, didn't use support brackets and drilled the holes in the wrong spot, sheesh. It has two passenger seats and no driver seat, the recline button on both seats in on the right hand side. And then some fool painted the hood black. It's kinda like what the monkey said before he peed into the cash register, this is gonna run into money.

Thanks again everybody for the welcomes. It is good to know we're not alone in this thing of ours.
(I like those floorboards you had there Russ. Did you replace the whole floorpan? Any squirrel nests?)

Friday I'm gonna have a sit down with my mechanic and have him give it a checkup after I get it towed. I just want to get it driveway driveable for now so that I can at least move it around, maybe even smoke up the old tires, oh yeah. Right now it stalls when I put it in gear. I tried looking for vacuum leaks and adjusting the idle mixture but no luck.

Come springtime when I have a few bucks put away I'll start working on the interior and get it on the road. Winters in NY are no place for Challengers anyway, I learned that long ago with my first one, they tend to slide off the road and stay there until help arrives! Steve
