Underhood insulation on a 440-6 bbl 'Cuda

I'm finishing a restoration on a '70 V-code, 4-speed, sport hood, non-shaker. When I bought the car a couple of years ago, it had underhdod insulation installed (the molded type). However, it rubbed a little on the air filter, scratching the decal. All was stock, mounts, engine, air cleaner assembly, so the the height is OK. I can only conclude that 440-6's did not receive insulation, but I want to make sure since I'm restoring to factory specs. I hope some of you may provide some insight from that they've seeen out there. Thanks!

I'm by no means an authority. Some cars had insulation, some did not. You could very well be on the right track here though. I'm not sure I have seen a 6-pack setup with insulation.

I pulled the underhood insulation off the bottom of the hood on my V code Superbird for the same reason you mentioned.   Can't verify your theory, but certainly wouldn't argue against it.

If it originally came with the pad it would be coded for it; J55. Hood pad and factory undercoat.

I have just fitted one of the moulded underhood liners to my 383.  It rubbed on the air cleaner due to the higher edelbrock manifold so I cut a bigger hole in it for clearance.  Also rubs the tips on the snorkels but am now going to let it self-clear and then refinish the air cleaner.

Thanks for all of your answers. I had not noticed that the build sheet has an optinon for this. Mine is not marked. However, mine IS undercoated, perhaps done at the dealer or sometime during its like. Thanks again.

Underhood insulation is there for noise abatement, and the factory didn't care if it rubbed or not. I have seen very few cars of any make or model that had underhood insulation, that did NOT rub on the engine somewhere. If you have undercoating, the likelihood is that it had the pad. I personally think it is your decision, and I have ripped the pad out of every car I owned, as it always droops, and rubs on things under there. I also hate the itch of fiberglass in my skin, and there is no avoiding it when you work on them.

Well, went for a run today in the Cuda after fitting the underhood liner and cutting DIDN'T work.  Cutting a bigger hole just meant that the liner rubbed further down the air cleaner - would've been better off it I had left it as it was and just let it rub on the top.

that's what i did (left it alone).
Does Rub a little but me thinks another benefit aside from noiseis protecting the paint from engine heat.

My six pack Challenger rubs a little, but not bad. my buddy is the original owner of his 440 six pack Cuda with a shaker hood , he says shakers never had insulation but almost every two scoop hooded six pack he has ever seen had it. for what it's worth.
