Steering Box
« on: September 20, 2008 - 11:58:04 AM »
Hey, can anyone point me in the direction of a cheap power steering box (remaned or otherwise) for a 70 challenger? Is the steering box the same on the 70 vs 71-4? Thanks!

Edit: I should add that I don't really need anything fancy, high ratio or stiffer feeling. Just a stock replacement would do (the car is a cruiser/drag car...it's not seeing any fast turns with the skinnies up front anyway lol). Just need something decent for a good price.

I got mine from Autozone for a 73 along with a 73 pitman arm, bolted in.  The early pitman arms are much more money and the boxes are too.  IIRC after the core charges were clear it was 170 buck for both.

When I still had power steering that's what I did - the pump was good, and dodged that expensive pitman arm.
Autozone had it in next day.

Cool, thanks. so im guessing the only difference is in the pitman arm shaft/splines, no length/size difference on the pitman arm overall or the steering box? Don't want to put a steering box in that doesn't fit my headers or a pitman arm in that throws my alignment off, assuming neither will be changed if you guys have done it.

thanks again!

Should be good, i had no problems with mine.  I did have it aligned afterwards due to some minor suspension work i did though.

Yes the sector shaft is a different size but they bolt up/in no problem.

May as well rebuild the coupler while you're in there too.

Just replaced a 70-71 box and pitman arm for a Firm Feel 72 up. No differance in the arm besides the shaft diameter.
