help me make up my mind. stroker or gear vendors
« on: September 21, 2008 - 12:19:53 PM »
i can't make up my mind, i have a 74 cuda with a mild 340, 727 and 4.11's. with current setup i'm in the 13.5's at the track.
i would like to see high 12's next year but i also want to be able to get on the highway and cruise without grandma flippin me the bird as she screams by me.i already bought a set of eddy rpm heads and with my budget these are my options.

 1.  ported eddies with more cam on my current 340 [ this motor is over 10 years old, milage unknown ] gear vendors and leave the 4.10's in.

 2.  408 or 416 stroker with ported eddies, no gear vendors and change ratio for highway, maybe 3.55's ???

i love the idea of the gear vendors, i think it would be a blast and i would have the best of both worlds but i also like the idea of the stroker and that way everything is new. what would get better times the 340 setup or the stroker with tall gears? what gears would i need to run to keep the rpms under 3,000 at 70mph with 28'' tires?

i would pick the gear vendors. but that is just me. seems like it would be more fun with the GV because you get to cruise a little more and still go to the track.

I can't remember what the issues are but I know people on here have had problems with the gear vendors in e bodies. I would steer clear of the gear vendor and build the stroker motor. or go with a 518 overdrive transmission.

Well since my car is fairly similar to yours (mid 13s, 3.91s), I would definitely throw the eddie heads on, more cam and run the overdrive.

Gear vendor unit seems to be holding up fine in my dads Challenger.

With 4.10s, 28" tires, and a gear vendors. You'd be about 2,600rpm at 70mph. I'm about 3500rpm with 3.91s, 28.5", at 70  :misbehaving:

For the gear vendors drama, I submit this LONG thread.   :eek4:

i wouldn't think it would drop me that much in rpm. right now i'm close to 4,000rpm at 70mph. it would have to knock off 1400rpm. how much does your dads chally drop when he kicks in the gv? how fast does it shift, fast enough to use at the track?

You can build a mild stroker and use 3.23's and run 12's.  I cruise at 2850 rpms @ 65 with 26" tires.  When I use my 29" tires its around 2500rpms.

60' are terrible at 2.0 and I have a 22-2500 stall converter.

340 stroked to 422 Around 9.8-1 compression 302-2 Crane Cam Hydraulic Flat tappet 587 Iron Heads with porting Doug's 1 5/8 headers 727 trans and 3.23 8 3/4.  I run it on 89 but the engine builder tells me to run 87.lol  Also a Edelbrock Air-Gap intake and 770 Avenger Carb Vac sec.

32 degrees of timing at 2500 and 18 initial timing MSD ignition MP distributor

I would suggest to do what Tom did.  Next time I rebuild my engine, I will go with a stroker, no question about it.
