what is the general timing for a 440. 1967 440 509 cam, rpm intake, 750 edl, stock type distributer, will be installing new heads. is there a base i can go by. like initial,mechanical, vaccuum, and total
?

Initial 14* BTDC. Total 34*. This should get you close.

basially you need as much initial timing as possible with a big cam & low vacuum without overadvancing at 2500 RPM up so even 18 initial with 36* total if possible

I guess I have mine all wrong. I followed the book and set it at about 5*. I have a PurpleShaft cam and a Torker with a 750 holley. The engine is fresh and i am still trying to dial in the jetting and the timing. My exhaust temp is too high. Idle vacuum is only 6" in gear. I dropped my compression to 9.5:1 to hopefully run better on pump gas. The old engine used to ping like crazy on 94 octane even at 5*. Should i be advancing my timing as well?

Yes , your vacuum will rise , it will idle better & the heat will drop

Thanks for the input. I did not have my advance timing light but i set it around 12-14*. Vacuum is up to 8.5". I took it for it's first 30 mile drive today and the exhaust temp was a little lower. I did not want to romp on a new engine too hard but there was no pinging that I could hear.
