Fuel caps for 71 Challengers
« on: September 22, 2008 - 04:00:53 PM »
Has anyone had any luck finding  a locking gas cap to fit the 71 Challenger? I need to find one to fit under the flip top but so far I haven't found any on the internet. I'll keep searching, it's gotta be out there somewhere. Maybe I could use a bung from an old keg? :roflsmiley:

I've only seen the regular non-locking, non-vented caps on E-Bay for the 71's. I'll keep an eye out for you though.   :grinyes:

Thanks Mike, I'll keep looking too. Wonder if the caps for the 71 'Cuda will work?

I have a locking cap under my fliptop and its one of the Kragen's specials. I think it's made by stant. It's not correct but you can't beat the price, like $15 bucks or something. The last original locking cap for a flip top I saw on ebay went for more than $400!

Are you looking for an OE piece, or just any locking gas cap? I bought one at Riebes for 13 bucks for my '72, fits under the flip-top cap without issue.

I just found and bought a new non-locking gas cap for the 71 Challenger on eBay for $24.95. I wasn't worried too much about OEM, just wanted a gas cap that fits tight under the flip cap. Here's the guy I bought it from:

Thanks for the help guys. One part down another thousand to go...

BTW, I checked out Kragen's and a bunch of other places, nobody stocks a cap for the 71 Challenger, it's a unique size that Dodge only used for that one year. This should make the 71 more valuable to collectors since the gas cap is unique. :woo: Well, it's worth a try!

From what I know, 71 was the only year the original cap wasn't vented. I don't know about size.   :clueless:

Gas caps are vastly annoying.  My 1970-71 parts catalog has the diagram and the index entry calling out section 14-86-35.  There is no section 14-86-35; its skipped right over on one page.  So my massive (and NOT inexpensive) parts catalog can't give me the part numbers for fuel caps on my car.

Sucks.

The cap that came with my '71 car (already a chrome replacement) was stolen.  When I bought a replacement the parts guy asked if I had ECS and verified it, then gave me a vented cap.  He didn't steer me wrong on anything else but I have no idea if the vented type is 'original' correct for ECS.

to my knowledge a car with ECS had the tank vented / captured elesewhere so the cap should be non vented

The tank is vented via the extra tube in the trunk; its a nice layout with a vent tube running to each top corner of the tank (inside the tank).  I don't know if the repro tanks do that; I know they don't include the expansion tank in the top.

Guess I'll start looking for a non-vented unit.
