my boss gave me one of the old cores today thats still in the car, he said its seized from sitting around and he says if want to spend the time to pull it out i can have it, but i gotta tow the car away.

its a 1968 440 engine in a 1968 new yorker, he says it used to run when they parked it there 20 years ago, but now it won't turn over. The hood was always closed and the fluids were all drained, it looks really good but i can not turn it by hand.
He said to put some deisel in the cylinders to try and losen up ?

Anybody got any other ideas to losen up ?

penetrating oil is what I would start with , use up a whole can of Mopar penetrant , then try heat , heating the pistons with a torch & hitting them with cold water should free them

 :iagree:  And be patient.  It may take a few days to loosen them up, but unless it's all welded together, it will turn.  Just work it a little at a time.  My old block sat open to the weather with no heads on it for over ten years and I still managed to get it loosened up.  For all the good it did me, since it turned out to be a giant paperweight.

Throw some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a few days. Stuff is pretty amazing! Its make up is of course a closely guarded secret, although most of the home remedies I've heard of for breaking loose cylinders include varying mixtures of diesel, kerosene, atf, and regular old motor oil. Marvel's stuff is available at most auto parts stores.

Mike. Take the engine apart. Dont try to spin it first.  Once you have the heads, timing cover and oil pan off, pull the lifters,clean the tops of the pistons, then flip it over to spray the wrist pins with mystery oil or something. Undo the rods first , one at a time. The ones that are easy to get to. This way you can see which pistons are stuck or not. Keep track of your rod caps just incase they are not marked good.This will start to let the crank to spin. It is possible to get the crank removed when enough pistons slide down. Then work on the stuck pistons after that. Many times it's a wrist pin that is frozen up. If no ridge is present. Knock the stuck pistons out useing a stick of wood on the piston boss. Then procede from there.

If it's stuck it needs a rebuild.   If pistons are stuck hard. It needs to be vatted at a shop to help free up the guck after you have did what is above. This will help not to gouge a crease in the cylinder wall,  Remember .060 tho is diameter for bore not radial, so a deep scratch can hurt a new bore.  Seems your engine has gotten moisture from humidity and the rings will rust to the walls.:2cents:

Best advice so far Al. Mike, be patient and don't force anything. Time and mystery oil will work more than force.

I would love to see a picture of what this Mystery Oil can looks like as i have never heard of it before and sure could use some myself :2thumbs: anyone got a picture they can post please.

I've always had good luck w tranny fluid believe it or not...  but I agree... DONT force anyhing. A couple good wacks may be ok but dont get out the sledge!!!

thanks for the ansers i'm going to pull the motor with the trani, then take my time with some stuff in the pistons. The car is solid and no real rust anywhere, just surface stuff, but the interior seats are no good from the sun. I put a battry in and the power windows and seats still work but slow.

Yup. Over time moisture in the cylinders can lead to corrosion, rust, etc. If the car is outside and uncovered, water can find its way in directly as well. If its been stored all together and in the car it shouldn't be too bad, but it won't spin. You'll have to disassemble everything to break it loose. A nice "dead-blow" hammer can be very helpful in these situations, after everything has been given time to soak.
