Different color fender tag than car
« on: September 24, 2008 - 07:51:41 PM »
Hey all,  putting this question out there.  I have a Challenger that has a blue fender tag, yet the car is green. Has anyone else heard of a fender tag being a different color than the car? It's a '74 model. The car is on Ebay, and I received this question about it and don't know the answer. Any information on this would be appreciated.  I posted also on Moparts.

Barry, I know you are on here.  Have you ever heard of this??

looks funny to me, that isn't the screw thatholds it on the fender is it??  maybe the fender was off another car and the tag was removed from the bad fender and just screwed onto the replacement like that. :clueless: :dunno:

What is the color code on the fender tag?  I  just can't quite read it.  Does the cowl have the serial numbers stamped on it?  Does the radiator support have the serial numbers stamped on it?  Do they match the fender tag?

Could also be that blue was the original color, and they took the tag off and repainted the car green, but what Cuda hunter said is more likely.  Either way, the tag would have been on the car before it was painted at the factory, so it should be the same color if original.

Looks like G2 paint code, which would be frosty green. Car looks like a green in the pictures so that kind of lines up. Don't know why someone would paint the fender tag blue like that. match the VIN to the cowl, dash, and radiator support. if it all matches I would not worry about it too much.

I've never seen Gator Tops on '74 Challengers :feedback:

Hey all, thanks for the replies.  The car's numbers match everywhere.   And you're right gkring, it is KG2, which is called Frosty Green Metallic.  Neat color actually!  I'm not too worried about it really, but the question was asked since I have the car on Ebay, and I had no answer for the guy.   :clueless:

pink panther, i do not think the inner fender or fender has ever been replaced on the car.  Not 100% sure, but it all looks original in there.

Culvers, I think this is a regular vinyl top?  I don't think it is a gator grain top.  I could be wrong on this too.
The car is extremely clean, and I have no idea why someone would paint the fender tag another color, especially 318 blue.  :dunno:

V1G on a 1974 Challenger just means green vinyl top.

1970 was the only model year with the gator grain top on Challengers.

It looks like the fender tag was repainted to me.  :2cents:

Here's another theory: perhaps the tag was removed for cleaning, and they used a harsh cleaning agent that had a "unique" effect on the paint. Have you ever seen what a strong cleaner can do to automotive finishes? The tag looks awfully clean, and also looks to be the same age as the rest of the car. Since the color was originally green, one of the components of the mix would be a blue pigment. This could explain the color difference, with the otherwise consistent look of the finish.

Thanks for the reply Barry!

Supercuda, that is a good take on it too.  Both the inner fender and the tag seem to have the same wear, and it definitely hasn't been altered in a long time.  Thanks all!

Have you had the tag off the fender?  What color is the back side of the tag? Scratch the blue paint and see if there is some green under it.......

I haven't had the tag off the car.  I may pull it off this evening and see.  Thanks.

Could the car have been repainted blue, then repainted back to the original color ?

The car appears to have never been repainted.  It's baffling to me too.  Not really sure! :dunno: :clueless:
