Orange Box ignition VS Stock Electronic box
« on: September 25, 2008 - 01:28:28 PM »
Ok, I have a stock 318 w/ stock electronic ignition. I have seen there some companies offer the ORANGE BOX for the electronic Ignition. Would this be any improvment?

The orange box is the stock unit.

If you want a better one use the FBO version.

I don't think you will see any difference on a stock engine that is running correctly. If the car runs right, the ignition still has some voltage reserve that you have not exceeded. Save your money for something else.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

If ya wanna do it on the cheap this is as good as the 6,000 rpm factory Orange box that costs $23 more. It'll also give you a spare in case yours takes a dump. Just don't expect a race ignition in a box the size of a voltage regular for $20.  :2thumbs:

If you have an older ignition module, I'd say keep it. The new orange boxes are made in China, and are of questionable quality. For what it's worth, I have proven to myself that the ignition module FBO sells beats the tar out of the new orange box.

What type of an improvment will be seen by using the FBO unit on the stock motor. I plan shortly to change over to a later stock 4brl intake with a 600 edelbrock carb and duel exhaust while maintaining a stock overall look. Any info would really help. THANKS!!

The unit I have not is stock but old. I am just learning so I realy love any feedback I can get.

The FBO unit looks stock. No messing with your wiring. I just found that my car starts far easier with the FBO ignition box over the China made orange box. I should also note that I have bought the hole ignition system from FBO. That meaning the ignition box, coil, and ballast resistor.  Even given this setup, if I put my old orange ignition box on there, it is harder to start.  I tried it out of curiousity.   :grinyes:

The Chrome box allows for higher RPM , I tend to agree that the newer Orange box is questionable
the FBO box switches faster & can offer some gains although if any ign system is working properly the gains can be minimal or non-existant
I would pass ont he rest of the FBO system , I have proven them to be no better than what you already have

I don't get along with Don at FBO (to say the least) but the ignition box is a good product and in independant tests has proved to be better than the MP versions. They do a good electronic regulator too that looks just like the old mechanical regulator on the pre-70 cars and is a direct swap.
