Changing the center will not change anything with the diff itself........ Axles will drop straight back in... the only problem you may have is if the yokes on each center section are different from one another, this will require a change of universal joint on the tailshaft.

Make sure that your sure-grip has the center pins in it, that the axles push against each other with. Without these you will not be able to adjust your axle end-play. (don't use green bearings)

make sure the inner cups on the sure grip are in line Before installing the center section , you can test this by sliding an axle into the side gears

they do not take side loading as well as the tapered roller this can shorten the life of the brg & they often require either the center pin removed from the suregrip or the axles shortened when they are installed

Correct me here if I am wrong Rob, I believe the center section pins were only used on 1968 & earlier 742 case sure grip center sections?? Not sure of the exact year of the changeover, but do know the later years did not use the center block pins!!

So what is the problem with the Green Bearings?
A Tapered roller bearing is WAY stronger than a ball bearing. That's why they use them on rearend pinions and carriers and the hubs of 4WD trucks. GM uses the rollers on their axels because they are CHEAPER.

the clutch style sure grip uses the 2 small buttons , the later cone stlye has a floating center bock , typically the 742 had clutch & the 489 has cone but after 40 years a lot of clutch type have been swapped into later carriers
